I’m waiting for the jars of tomato pasta sauce that I bought in bulk on special offer to become a highly prized commodity.

Being an ultra cautious sort, I invest in trackers and investment trusts. Timing in those has worked rather well since the coronavirus downturn last year, but having being burnt before on high return type investments (read Carillion!), I now invest in things I understand and that have bricks and mortar behind them. I am a bit of a dinosaur though, and am probably missing out on the greatest thing since sliced bread, or maybe tulips.

I don't massively understand it (my son does and has made quite a fair bit over the last few years with crypto) and I know he bought some Ada at 2 cent which is now worth .80 USD (last convo we had) he holds lots of different cryptos.
I hold some XRP which is doing well currently and I've made a fair bit of cash which is nice.

Dooogs, it doesn’t really. Bitcoin is designed so that every new Bitcoin is harder to find than the last, so the energy usage is somewhat exponential. Additionally, the Bitcoin blockchain is now being used for other ridiculous public proofs where a simple PKI-verified signature would do, so if that catches on then it can only get worse. I think proof-of-work based systems will proliferate if people indulge, so that just replicates the disaster.

Doogs, there are plenty are cryptos that aren't mined at all. Just magiced up overnight out of thin air.

My post apocalyptic scenario is not meant to be taken as anything else than a philosophical point about the meaning of money and how the commonly used tokens we call money only work within a set of societal rules. That being said, of course toilet rolls and pasta have more intrinsic value on a personal basis than Bitcoin in any scenario.

I've been thinking about investing in crypto but want to research some more. Trying to find an ethical one and one that doesn't require mining. NOT OneCoin!

From a purely semantics perspective, is it possible to 'invest" in crypto. It doesn't produce a cashflow. So it's pure price speculation, no?
