Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

I went with Fetch records from the last 365 days (with some caveats too): fetcheveryone.com/blog/3/2023/8/470884

This confirms how shit I am on a bike 😀

I've amended the formulae a little bit.

The male and female record time values, t, were described by t=md+c, where d was the distance, and the values of m and c were calculated looking at the best times of all Fetchies during the last 365 days, and taking the best fit line.

I've made two changes to my model:

1) I've ignored some of the longer times i.e. 100k+, and focused on the data from 10k up to 80k.

2) I've removed the 'c', as it makes sense that as 'd' gets close to zero, so does 't'. So both are now described more simply as t=md.

For males, m=86.28; for females, m=99.22.

This gives you a theoretical 'Fetch record' time e.g. for 50k:

male time = 50*86.28 = 4314 seconds = 71m54s.

female time =50*99.22 = 4961 seconds = 82m41s.

The actual records I've found within the last 365 days are 70m19s and 82m41s.

Once I've established the theoretical Fetch record for the distance you did, I adjust that for age, using curves for male and female athletes; and then compare your time to that adjusted figure.

As per my blog yesterday, I excluded Rainbow Rider from the female data as she's a Paralympic silver medallist. If we had the mens equivalent of RR, then I would include both - but I am trying to produce FBI scores that offer a comparable reading between male and female athletes.

Hopefully these changes will have made the scores a bit better.

Did you exclude ebike rides?

Are you meaning to create the curves, Max? In which case it shouldn't matter, as the data defining the 100 score is well above the legal speed for e-bikes.

I know what you mean MM,

Speaking as a 100% ebiker now, I assume my score is higher than it would be if I were conventional cycling....

I just think keeping them in probably has the capacity to falsely inflate the "average joe" data.....

The orange place, excludes all ebike rides from Segment records, QOM, etc

All the fastest times used to build the curves were NOT assisted, nor virtual, nor shed-based in any way :-)

I do have a policy of excluding these in other places too - the exception being the virtual challenge, where anything is game. If there are any tables that look like they are overrun with unfair comparisons, do please report them.

Although they are only a retailer and you can't get too sentimental about the current economic climate, sad news about Wiggle being in trouble. I've been shopping from them (and Chain Reaction Cycles) for longer than I care to remember. Their own brands DHB + Prime are great value, and they sponsored a pretty good women's cycling team for a number of years. Only this week I got a small order from them of a few things I needed across different sports that I might otherwise have had to buy from several different retailers.
