UM: I'm not definite, but it sounds like the wheel will have moved in the dropout. Unlike on bikes with derailleurs that take up the slack, fixed geared bikes typically use horizontal dropouts that allow the wheel to be moved for or aft slightly to achieve chain tension. You get the chain tight, then tighten a couple of bolts to hold position. However if the starting torque is huge, or the bolt fractionally loose, it's possible for the wheel to move in the dropout. This can mean the wheel isn't straight or even worse the chain disengages. So, as it's potentially very dangerous they don't want riders continuing with it, and allow a restart. |

Thanks MM. Although with the new rules, they didn't get a rerun.

Ah, I'd missed that change. Sounds like a risky position to take, but that's the UCIs decision.

The commentators implied it's such a busy schedule, they've tightened things up to try and prevent too many re-runs. And 'poor prep' or 'poor maintenance' doesn't count. It has to be a technical breakage, which apparently are listed somewhere.

Hiya folks. Can anyone help me out by helping me find a list of men's and women's records for road cycling, from distances of say 10k right up to I guess 100, 200, 500k - whatever distances are commonly raced. PS I'm not interested in ones where the rider had assistance from e.g. drafting behind a big lorry, or down a big hill, or over ice or any fancy shizzle like that. If I can get a decent list, my plan is to build a cycling equivalent of WAVA. |

That is going to be tricky Fetch, as bike racing isn't clear cut with the many disciplines. We tend to rarely race over specified distances other than in time trials and on the track. Off road is a totally different beast, as is road racing. There is however an hour record: on the track. |

VTTA (Veteran Time Trial Association) may be of interest to you if you're looking at age grading. RRA often covers slightly obscure and rarely raced courses. CTT has more frequently raced standard distances, but especially at shorter distances the fastest courses were often so because of an implicit drag effect from passing traffic. |
