Playing against the best in the world probably had something to do with it.

Fairly even game, both teams started well, both got bogged down and lost wickets in the middle overs. They got another partnership going late in the innings, we didn't and that decided the game.
Word on TMS was that the ball started nipping around late in the England innings, so that helped the Aussie bowlers. Always bat 1st in an English ODI Day nighter is a good rule to follow, probably even more so in Sept.

Day nighter's should not exist in England. The conditions change so much.

Agreed; farcical organisation of the season (also RLODC semi final on a Monday? Barmy!)
Two or three bad shots which cost us wickets; what was Taylor thinking (answer: not much) when he'd got one four from Watson that over? Could've nudged for one; instead played ugly hoick and got bowled...

Hope we don;t start criticising every shot that gets a player out to a shot that isn;t defensive, otherwise we'll be back to 2-3 runs an over of blocking, nudging and nurdling in the top order while the required run rate becomes impossible for those coming in later. Hitting 6's and scoring 300+ requires some risk, not all of them will come off. Most 6's are the ball nipping 2cm away from an ugly wicket costing hoik....
Top 3 of Hales, Roy and Taylor had done their job and got us half way to the total at a run a ball. Great platform, regardless of how Taylor actually got out. If they can continue to play freely and not in fear, than that extra little judgement and experience will ensure that the risks taken are more calculated and come off more frequently. We'll be a damn good ODI batting side then, which is a long way up from 6 months ago....
The chase failed later on...

The bowling was pretty good too. Not much for the quicks but decent economy.

300 odd is a par score these days, possibly less, so we almost did it, when an ODI does go wrong, ot looks worse than the score suggests. Looked a good One Day batting line up to me..

Going to have to agree to disagree, Sarrers MDOT! Awful shot by Taylor (when he could've nudged a one, collected a fifty and gone on) especially as his four in the over was an inside edge to fine leg off an identical ball. Once he was out, it gave the Aussies a way in to the match.
I really like Taylor and was really disappointed in the shot; he's better than that. This new brand of aggressive ODI batting has made me want to watch 50 over cricket again, but the batting can't be headless. Even in T20, it's not just mindless bashing, more calculated risk.
If I were going to harp on about people, I might have mentioned our wicketkeeper-batsman, who's not having a great season...

Delighted that Surrey are back in Division 1, even with a relatively young side.
