We must have started watching cricket at the same time, Fetch. I was shocked to find Bruce French only played 16 Tests - it felt more like 60 at the time.

I was always amazed to see Alan Knott (in the archive footage the Beeb used to show during rain delays) hitting boundaries, never mind centuries...

I'd want to get past Haddin and Hagar first :-)

Yeah, given what our last wicket partnership managed, I'm taking nothing for granted here. The Aussies do look a mess right now though.

My first recollection of test cricket was England winning the first test in 1985 - fielder dropping a skyer as (I think) Lamb hit the winning runs during a pitch invasion. By the fourth test I had some photocopied scorebook pages (from the man who used to deliver sausage rolls to my parents catering business), and watched England continue to work over a very poor Australian team (except for Border).

I remember that Aussie series (I started watching in 83 or 84 but didn't really understand what was happening until '85) - I was transfixed by Kepler Vessels, not for anything about his batting ('nuggety' would be the appropriate adjective) but for his obviously-invented name. I was beside myself with joy when he re-appeared as the SA captain around 1992 or so.

The first moment that really stayed with me was Botham coming back from his spliff ban (1986?) and taking a wicket with his first ball.

Hussain and Atherton are both against the follow-on. Bat Australia out of the game and then bowl at them on a turning pitch.

I think it's such a shame that we are so over-reliant on Jimmy Anderson ;)

Boycott loving the fact the Aussies have been batting dreadfully :-)

I remember the 1981 series, first I can recall. Brilliant, interfered with my O level revision though.

1985 was another classic, went to day 1of the Lord's test just to see Botham. The great man was in an over before lunch and smeared an imperious 4, no playing for the lunch interval. We awaited excitedly all lunch for the afternoon onslaught, and he went for it 2nd or 3rd ball after, caught on the boundary. Gutted. Nothing left but to get p&ssed (which in itself was great as you could drink all pm, unlike pubs which shut during the afternoon).

Also went to the full Edgbaston test that series, living rough in my mates Vauxhall Viva for the 5 days. We nearly got done for vagrancy, and were chased round the bull ring by some skinheads but saw a great test once the rain stopped. Richard Ellison swung it like a banana and took 5 wickets in a morning and I think Gower hit a big century. Marvelous.

I got into cricket in 1991. My dad was home all summer with a bad back and therefore glued to the telly. He told me if I wasn't going to revise for my A levels, my only other option was watching the cricket. It was a glorious year, we were playing the Windies, Viv's last tour. I remember asking what a maiden was and as it was explained, understanding this game was not just rounders played between two points, but rather a glorious battle between batsman and bowler.

A couple of years later, the Aussies came over, with a blond bowler touted as the next big thing in spin bowling. I trotted off to Canterbury to watch Kent v Australia and, while sitting close to the boundary, had the pleasure of being chatted up by said blond Australian.

Many things have changed over the years, but my love affair with cricket remains a rare constant. It even got me a husband!
