I've read an article about him previously - best ever figures for a player playing only one test and best bowling average for anyone who had 10+ wickets in test cricket. He was also one of the few people who took more wickets in first class cricket than runs he scored with the bat. He was gassed in WWI and diagnosed with shell shock and then made his Lancashire debut in 1919, never having seen a county cricket match. He then went to Cambridge and played for the university before taking a teaching job which allowed him to play for Kent during the school holidays. He was a late injury call up to England at the age of 37 and the West Indian batters found him unplayable on a turning pitch. He was taken on the England tour to India the following winter but struggled with the conditions and didn't make the test team.
