Am I allowed to ask dumb questions? What is "swing" as distinct from "spin"? Does swing happen in the air, but spin is only after coming off the surface? :-) G

Apart from myself, there is only one cricket fan left in my office and they're on long-term sick leave. There were two others but they left and moved away. Not a topic of discussion tomorrow morning.

Working in IT, about 50% of my colleagues are Indian. Our summer "social" (drinks and nibbles in the park) was cricket and it was fantastic socially. :-) G

Just to pull up a point. 240 is not a "shocking" 50 over score.

It might well be below par and might certainly be less than you are used to, but it's not "shocking"

It's an old pitch in testing conditions and in a WC final where pressure is at its highest.

Australia, even 2 down, should still be favourites, but make no mistake, if India bowl well (and stop searching for wickets with every ball), 240 is competitive on this pitch.

I think you're right. Spin is effectively in the wrist and fingers and causes deviation once the ball bounces. Swing is the result of keeping one side of the ball shiny and to allow the other side to scuff. As the ball travels through the air, the shiny side will rotate faster than the other which causes the movement.

Anyone else able to stream this on channel 5 via My5? Not working for me and we don't have an aerial to watch old school style.

Yep, it's here: channel5.com working OK for me, although about 90s behind the action.

42/1 after 5 overs and we just had a wicket maiden. One of those up down scoring games but it appears the aussie plan is to smack it around

HappyG(rrr) Yep, you've got it. Swing bowlers tend to bowl with the seam straight towards the wicket hoping for some movement in the ait, spinners with the seam cross-ways to catch the pitch and bounce off in another direction.

Spin = movement due to the ball - primarily due to movement off the pitch - due to spin applied by the bowler to the ball. I say primarily as there can be movement through the air due to the spin too.

Swing = where the seam is held in a straight, usually upright, position and the movement is due to air flow past the ball. There is conventional and reverse swing.

Seam = where the ball moves off the pitch due to hitting the seam on the ball. You control this by controlling the angle of the seam at release.

You can have combinations of these too.
