Short ball plan in place now. Let's see what happens.

This was my post in Sep 2022 including a Stokes quote: fetcheveryone.com/forum/cricket-thread-53787/3355 Going back to England's second test win vs South Africa bbc.co.uk "What we did incredibly well with the bat was assess it was a wicket that we couldn't go out in the way that we spoke about, which I think is real progress for this side," said Stokes. I think that is what all the Bazball naysayers have been saying, play the conditions rather than predetermining that it has to be rapid batting at all times. |

"name the years (if any) since you started watching cricket where you reached the end of the season and felt that the team played consistently well and were worthy of your praise." For everything pre-2004 was inconsistent - some highs - e.g. Atherton and the escape in Johannesburg, Mark Butcher at Headingley in '97, the series win in Pakistan in 2001, Vaughan scoring stacks of runs in 2002/03 in Australia, but equally there were lots of lows - the defeat to New Zealand in 1999, numerous Ashes series, SA series, India series etc. When Fletcher came along, it definitely professionalised the England set-up, but for me, 2005 wasn't consistent - it was a hugely exciting series and an important victory given the drubbings the Aussie teams of the 80s, 90s and 00s gave us, but it was a bit like Bob Willis' ashes in 81 - an underdog rising up, getting a bit lucky in a highly competitive series. And Glenn McGrath standing on a ball. I think the drubbing we got in 2006/7, epitomised by the Harmison ball to 2nd slip, proves this. However, that period also *did* lay the foundations for the only time I can recall where England played consistent excellent hard nosed winning cricket - the Flower era 2009-14 - 3 ashes series wins (09, 10/11 and 13), series wins against India home and away, no1 in test rankings etc. But as 'The Edge' film I watched last weekend showed, this was done at some cost. Since 2014, we're still better than we were pre-Fletcher, but definitely inconsistent. The list of series victories in recent years shows this: espncricinfo.com |
