Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Great for the record books but it’s hard to call this a test.

My thoughts entirely. It seems an excuse for everyone to improve their test averages.

This. We learn nothing from this. Just a money generator for the ECB I guess.

I wonder how common it is that no player out of the 11 worsens their average with either bat or ball? (In just one of the teams obvs, it’s hardly likely for both to achieve this.)

Dreadful start by Surrey at Gloucs. - 29-4 (3.1 overs). Paying customers may by home a bit earlier than expected.

On the other hand how do Ireland become a competitive test nation without playing test cricket

Previous tests against England have been tight and they have beaten them in Odis in recent memory....

I suspect you could say the same with current Zimbabwe, Sri Lankan and Bangladesh *test* sides.

But if they don't play test cricket they won't improve.

Actually you might also have said England sides against the west indies in the 80s or Australian sides in the 90s which will answer jdas stat q if nothing more recent does

Some of the England test matches against Australia in the 90s were similar score lines to this one

I saw Sri Lanka playing Surrey at The Oval in 1984, a 3-day game which Surrey won easily by 159 runs. The tourists then played a one-off 5-day test at Lord's vs England. After what I saw previously, they stood no chance yet England failed to bowl them out. An early indication of how good they actually were.

Zimbabwe have come, gone and are now returning to the test arena. Bangladesh and Afghanistan are knocking on the door. It may take a while but there's no reason why Ireland can't do the same even if it takes a few years.

There is every reason.

There's no first class cricket in Ireland.

Quite a number of this Irish team have played little no red ball cricket.
