India take an early lead in the “most ducks this year”. Will they still have it tomorrow morning?

I think the killer for me was that Graham Thorpe ‘has been working with Rory Burns to improve his technique’

What the hell have they been doing up to now then, as a coaching team? His technicsl flaws are not new - did they not know, or (more likely) just have lovely happy clappy jolly nets in which that sort of hard yakka was avoided, hoping they’d get away with it. In Australia. Against Starc, Cummins and Hazlewood.

Silverback is not fit for purpose.

Has any side ever, anywhere, been 0 for 6 after the first over? That's my current level of optimism.

The national side coaching set-up isn't and shouldn't be for major technique work. And the coaches shouldn't be doing that sort of coaching. This is the same for all international teams. And Franchise teams - Ricky Ponting doesn't go and coach Mumbai Indians or whoever in the IPL to coach technique - he goes to offer game/situation-based insight. Which is the same in international cricket - it's minor adjustments (e.g. when to leave on length, when to leave on line etc, what shots to eliminate due to the pitch and so forth) and game-based decisions.

It's the development coaches through the counties (and not the main 1st XI coaches here either) and the ECB/England Lions set up etc that is and should be doing the major technique coaching.

So, the fact that Graham Thorpe is doing coaching work on technique is actually an admission that he's not selectable for England at the moment due to technical flaws.

What has been done too much is the "let the player work it out for themselves" coaching method. That's what's led to all the quirky techniques that several England players have had recently. There was a really good article on Cricinfo recently about just this. But this type of coaching method is in-vogue in most sports at the moment.

Mainly in-vogue with the coaches themselves as it means they don't have to do any work??

I think you're right fozzy, and the underlying problem is we've got a nation of limited over players, not test players, but we have to find a test squad from them. While the priorities remain the same we'll never put out a "proper" test side and always end up relying the on the few individuals with great natural skill.
