This is getting crazy. We keep going for comedically pessimistic predictions on this thread, yet none of us are managing to be pessimistic enough.

Just woke up and thought I'd quickly check the score. Joy

Wow.

There is nothing more to be said.

This is surely the benchmark against which all future one-sided contests will be compared.

Time to resign and get on the plane.

Dismal. Really interesting interview with Paul Farbrace on R5Live last night, who said that (what we have all said) techniques aren't good enough and quirky techniques are too easy to dismantle. Suspect he was looking at Burns. Look at Gooch, Gower, Robin Smith, Trescothick, Cook. Simple, repeatable techniques.

Can we not build a side with actual specialists? I'd start with putting an actual keeper in. Foakes in. Jimmy is averaging 23 away from home with over 100 wickets in the last 7 years. Age is just a number. We can 'take the positives' that Root bats a million times better than he captains. Robinson is clearly worth persevering with.... and that's about it. I'll keep Hameed for now, so we have 5. Stokes is a marvellous player, capable of improbable things. He can stay and we have 6, but now the cupboard is bare. You'd have to look at Sibley as someone who can bat time. Probably Pope has something to work with but we aren't seeing it on this tour (Root's first Bus tour was terrible IIRC). Wood seems like the right sort, so he can stay and play when fit. Jofra gets better with every game he doesn't play.

Agree with others that YJB, Buttler, Broad, Burns and Leach among others have all shot their bolt in this format. To lose this game by an innings... I would have expected a decent club side to be able to get 60-odd.

Also heard Julian Wyatt (ex-Somerset pro) say the old adage is a good player has 4 shots. A great player 3. His view is they are all capable of playing lots of very high risk shots but none are capable of just repeating what they do time and time again (e.g. Cook - nudge off the legs, square cut, push down the ground).

With respect I think that’s old fashioned bollox.

So much video analysis etc these days at test level every team has a plan for everything opposing players do.

You come armed with only 3 shots and you’ll find those scoring avenues shut down and your weakness probed relentlessly.

To some extent that is Sibley/Hameed’s issue: not enough shots. No pressure for the bowler/fielders. ‘Batting time’ doesn’t relieve pressure at test level, because good bowling keeps coming at you, the 4 bowlers are fitter, accurate and their pace only drops to 80mph ish from upper 80s - still decent . There’s no dibbly dobbler bowling low 70s with a juicy four ball an over to bat time for.

What relieves pressure at test level is scoring runs. A great test player, even when facing top bowlers can rotate the strike and punish the rare bad ball. A decent test player can survive (sometimes) but then start scoring and applying pressure when the ball stops doing things and bowlers pace drops slightly.

If you can do that, then and only then, does test match batting get relatively easier. And that will never ever happen for Hameed and Sibley, or any player at test level with too few scoring options.

Australian radio coverage, which can be brutal, have pretty much said - keep Root, why didn’t Broad play, Jimmy is very highly rated and admired and get rid of the rest.
Over the years Australia have always produced players that can contribute with runs down the order. Typically, the tail end can all add 25+ runs each, so even when the top order fail, the team still hits a decent total.

England have won maybe one session?

The running joke here is that England can’t even get a positive Covid test 😀

How about this to reform the domestic red ball game.

No LBWs off any delivery between 60 and 80mph. In 2/3 years the trundlers and dobblers will have gone the way of the Stegosaurus and there’s an absolute premium on developing genuine nip or quality spin.

Once teams start bringing that to the table, batsmen will start learning to adapt, or go the way of the trundlers.

Hell, you’d get line and lengthers being coached to bowl pace, rather than the other way round.
