His stint is done, regardless of ‘obvious replacement’ or not.
Any new captain would at least bring impetus and energy, rather than the stench of failure and negativity. That won’t stop us getting skittled, but it would bring energy and concentration in the field and that at least is a step forwards.

The 6 I had as sure starters
Malan - only just in and in form. No. Root - current capt Stokes - too much on his plate already Broad - too old Anderson - too old Robinson - young only just started
Everyone else isn’t guaranteed a starting spot.

Burns Hameed and Buttler were sure starters.
Broad and Anderson were not, they didn’t start at the Gabba.
Although I’d give it to Broad. At 35, potentially a season or two left and seems to respond to the odd prod, thrived on the Aussies hate for a while so maybe also would rise to the responsibility.

ARB was the shining light for the Australians in 85 and 86/7, whilst the rest of the team switched around endlessly to shore up their failings. What was it that produced such a turnaround by the time they arrived in 89?

Ask fozzy if he thinks buttler should be the long term starter.
Burns and hameed might start this tour but neither are certs moving forwards.
Burns 27 average and 1 century in 18 innings in 2021 just doesn’t shout starter.
Hameed 25 average in his 8 innings back after a 4 year absence and pile the captaincy on him as well.

The story is generally ARB identified that the team were too pally with England, not nasty enough. Think a lot were on the County circuit at the time. The old barbecue round Botham’s was a winning ploy 😀
The 89 team arrived with a marked change in attitude - no socialising, harder, fitter, ruthless. There to win, not make friends.
Think there was a changing of the guard in both teams; the Gower/Gatting etc funboy era ending for us. The Waugh/McGrath ultra professional era beginning for them.

Bit of trivia I found out today. Only 2 players this century have taken 25 wickets and scored 250 runs in the same series (assuming cric info is correct). R Ashwin is one of them and the other is … Someone who England could probably do with at the moment

@TRO - yeah that sounds about right. Boon and Merv went from buttery to bulldogs, the Waugh brothers came in, and Taylor/Marsh seemed pretty solid. Lawson rejuvenated, Alderman having Gooch for breakfast (or am I conflating series?). And Ian Healy, the birth of the modern-day batting keeper.

We just need to stop playing away Test Matches. Can't we red list them all?
