Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

It is not the whole batting line up it is the top 3, sort that out and it will not look so bad, you cannot keep having to battle back fro 5 for 2..Yesterday if the openers just lasted 10 overs it would look different. I still say Root, as good a leader as he is in terms of batting, made a right cock up of the morning, just bowl straight.

Stokes is a big miss in the middle. The openers are definitely the biggest issue and set the tone. But even so outside of root I don’t see who is a dead cert starter.

I could see Stokes as a latter day Kallis. Clearly has the technique/ability to bat at 3 and contribute up to 10 overs a day. Obviously has to be available for selection.

3 and 4 sewn up then, Stokes/Root.

A couple of openers clearly required. I don't see Burns/Sibley as the future but perhaps one should stay and move Hameed up. Burns on balance. Well, not balanced technically. It was notable yesterday that Hameed was trying to play with soft hands and take the slips out of the equation. Not how it ended obviously.

If - IF - YJB has sorted the technical flaw that sees him bowled playing through wide mid on, he could be 5. Pope looks better the less he plays, so he can be 6. A proper keeper is required, so Foakes at 7.

I'm not sure about Sam Curran, but he or Woakes at 8. Robinson has done enough. I'd have Leach as a better spinner than Moeen, but if Moeen plays, he bats 7 and all move down one. Would also balance the side better if/when Broad comes back i.e. Broad for Curran, Moeen for Leach. Then Anderson 11. Bit of a tail but the top 7/8 should be there to score the runs.

lol at Pope......looks better the less he plays

It actually feels quite depressing as so many top order options have been tried and there has only been limited success but even those successes have petered out

Bowling is proppoed up by Anderson and Broad as well. Wood should be a good option but fitness a major concerm. Bit like Archer who I almost forgot about

If all fit and available we have about six or seven decent players

Move Hameed up to open and give him a good few tests to bed in - can't be any worse than current opener options and it may just work

No mention of the Cooke (66* off 56 balls, 5-61) vs Cook (68) semi-final yesterday then? Looks like it was a close game.

Could have gone either way. Rest of the season is going to be fairly flat. Looking forward to actually turning up in person in September mind - the Monday of the Gloucestershire game coincides with a cheeky day off.

Essex set a good base, but seemed to stutter, losing wickets just as they looked to building a total 300 plus and somehow managed to get bowled out, albeit in the last over. Glamorgan got off to a flyer in response. Some Essex bowling looked a little suspect, but they made the most of it. Definitely a game Essex could have won, but I have seen many of them in my time.
