Maybe cream turned less readily to 'thousand wash grey' in a less disposable age?

I grew up with most of my cricket done with black school trousers worn and a white shirt. I got cricket trousers for Christmas so was posh

White trousers frowned upon here.

I remember a chap who is now in his 60s playing in a British Rail logo white shirt until pretty much the year 2000.

I used to play with a very nice Indian lad who wore a dress shirt, complete with the pleats and faded beige chinos. He bowled really quick, which was surprising as he always wore Dunlop Green Flash plimsolls.

ION after the excitement, panache and thrills of the 100, we are less than a week away from……watching Dom Sibley bat.

When I played for my school, I was the only person who actually played cricket for the local club and had a set of whites. The rest of the team played in random colours of tracksuits etc.

One week we were playing an Edinburgh based private school and we were instructed to wear all white.....and so 10 players had white football shorts and a white t-shirt.

Quite bizarrely although I played cricket, I wasnt part of the 'in' crowd and the captain who knew nothing about cricket didnt ask me to bowl often and I generally batted about no 7.

At the age of 15 I was plucked from obscurity by a neighbour who'd seen me lobbing a tennis ball against a wall and smacking the rebound around and was desperately trying to recruit young blood into an ageing local team. I'd never played more than knockabouts with mates in the local park, consequently my first season in Hampshire League cricket (despite being based in Berkshire) consisted of batting at 11 and not bowling. Mind you, I did more running in the field than the rest of them put together I think!

I had a similar experience in my first year at "big school". Our PE teacher, the gloriously named Mr Chicken, entered us in a cup competition. There were only 2 none private schools, ourselves and Cotmanhey. Eastwood was rough, but Cotmanhey was much worse, even we thought it was rough!

We played 2 matches against "posh" schools, both at home, I don't think they wanted us at their ground? Only myself and one other lad (Dave Brookes) had whites, the other 9 wore a combination of PE kit and school uniform. for both matches the opposition turned up in full kit, blazers, caps, cable knit jumpers with school crest on, big cricket bags (this was before coffins) they had their own bats and pads!!. Both matches followed a similar pattern, we lost the toss, the Poshos batted, me and Dave Brookes bowled them out for very little, me and Dave Brookes knocked of the runs. They skulked off in their branded mini bus while we flicked v's at them.

Eastwood v Cotmanhey in the final, at Cotmanhey. They didn't have any players with whites, so not sure how they beat the posh schools. In a monumental piece of bad planning, it was played on the day of our school disco. We won the toss, and keen to get back for the disco, put them in, bowled them out and knocked them off. It was all over in less than 10 overs. We flicked v's as we drove off with the cup.

Strangely, as defending champions, we were not invited to play the following year, or ever again.
