The ECB couldn't do much else for now.

I've been thoroughly depressed by comments elsewhere saying effectively "But he CAN'T be dropped - he's played so well"... which implies that any off-the-field misbehaviour is acceptable if you play well enough on the field...

Both the player and the nature of his 'misjudgement' [my word] are of very high profile in 2021.

I agree, Dooogs. ^

I agree Dooogs, but....I'm a little uncomfortable that historical social media posts that someone posted when they were still a "youth" are punished in the present.

However that said, if the tweets are as serious as reported (I've not read what they said), then some form of punishment is merited.

I'm just not sure what the punishment should be.

the whole subject of past social media history, particularly when taken out of context, is difficult.

I don't necessarily diasagree, fozzy. If the argument is that he was an idiotic teenager (and by all accounts, he was), I'm happy for that context to be taken into account as mitigation.

It's the witless "performance on the pitch negates behaviour off it" arguments that leave me cold.

Obviously this doesn't apply in all situations of course.

Yes, Dooogs, I agree on that point.

Just as I thought it appropriate that Hales and Stokes (and for that matter, Pietersen) were suspended in those particular situations.

Oscar the Grouch
He'll be tucking in if he is, Greppers.

On the whole social media affair, it really is an education thing. Once you say it, it is out there forever. It doesn't say, yeah but he was pissed, yeah but he was joking, yeah but he's not like that. It just says it. Forever. The clubs have to get that into the players when they are still in the age group settings... and I DO think he should be judged on it now, otherwise we are saying that it was acceptable. Bit strange that neither of his clubs picked up on it.... and if it was said when he was out of contract, that makes it more difficult but the fact remains it was said and done. Shame that the club(s) didn't come out and say, yes we knew about those and here is the punishment from that time...

TMW - read a recent interview with Overton with some very clumsy language about how he is 'the first to go up to Azhar Ali in the changing room', which suggests, indeed, that the lesson is not learned.

On Oscar's point about education, I'm sure that when my youngest was in the England Women's Development Programme aged 15 about 8 years ago they had sessions on social media (along with corruption etc.).
