We have had a great run from 2005 to now. I could compare across era’s but ODI World Cup winners. T20 winners. Ashes overseas and India overseas series wins. World number 1 test side. When did Australia last win a series in England?

Look at the McGrath, pointing, warne Aussies. They aren’t the same and I’m not sure when they will hit those heights again.

Stokes. Ok so he won the World Cup and scored that 100 at Headingley. But we didn't win the Ashes. He looks technically good but averages under 40 with the bat and always seems to be injured and not bowling flat out.

He has been elevated to bat at 5 and be our best player because of the lack of quality around him.

( I am not gingerist, honest)

There have to be some more South African/ New Zealand/ West Indian players to poach. Seems more effective than hoping for England born talent to flourish.

Stress fractures is what you get when you pick the wrong team over bowl someone, rob playes of confidence through crap selection and generally make a bit of hash of it.

At least we have a decent captain ;-).

It did look ok, perhaps it will look ok again once we play at home, I'd prefer we had made a better fist of it. Stokes at 5 does give the game away somewhat, he is a 6 or 7.

Who will actually make the Ashes tour, Root, Stokes, Buttler (he did well going home), Foakes, Leach, Moeen (I know!), Anderson and Broad (still!)

White wash!

So Root, Broad, Anderson - all ok.

Leach looks to have come good.

Stokes looks too high at 5, but there's a lot of resistance (not least from him) to bat lower at 6 or 7, plus there's little pressure from everyone else to push him down.

Sibley, Crawley, Pope, Burns - all major causes for concern - they all need to go back and make runs in county cricket.

Lawrence - jury out. Still doing stupid things, but has shown some character and application in this test. See what he does in county cricket and I'm assuming he'll play against New Zealand.

Archer, Wood, Stone - concerns over fitness. Archer and Wood proven at test level, but keep getting injured. Stone gets injured, and unproven. Is the plan to take all 3 to Australia in the hopes that one is fit to play in each test? Are we going to rotate?

Moeen - Guess it's up to him - he's playing IPL so will miss much of the county season. Leach is the better spin bowler, and England already have an allrounder in Stokes who doesn't make enough runs reliably....but Moeen would probably find a slot.

Foakes v Buttler. I've said my piece on this - I'd pick Foakes as he's a much better keeper and I think he can bat well enough. But the Buttler love-in will continue and he'll play

Bairstow - had his chance. Unlikely to play for England again. Won't play enough County cricket (due to IPL) and so cannot press his case. Only chance would be a disasterous summer v New Zealand and India and he makes *some* runs and then comes back for the last couple of tests or something. Then may have a chance to go to Australia. But unlikely. Best chance might be if there are injuries to Buttler *and* Foakes and he'd play as keeper.

Anyone I've missed?

The big concern is the batting (and this is not just because of India and the lack of ability v spin - btw look at Kohli, Pujara and Rahane's averages in this series) - it's just not consistent or disciplined enough. There's a huge opening for *anyone* in county cricket to make early season runs and stick their hand up for selection.

Oh yes Dom Bess.

V poor treatment of him.

He needs a season playing for Yorkshire with the aim of improving his consistency and confidence. I'd say he needs to not play tests this summer and then get him ready for Australia.

Taking him to a test match if he's not going to play will be utterly pointless.
