Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I think enforcing the follow on would have either certainly resulted in an Indian win or draw at best.

And almost certainly in losing the 2nd test too

That was Cook's point at the end..the consequence of a decision if it goes wrong. You dominate the test match for 4 days...declare too early and lose and then the effect that has on the team for the rest of the series.

Ok. I can say that with a certain high degree of probability that enforcing follow ons in back to back tests is statistically likely to lead to an underperformance in the 2nd test.

And I can look at England's record in the subcontinent on turning pitches chasing low totals.

I can buy that now Fozzy :-)

I still think forcing India to bat again in this game and the game would be almost wrapped up by now. As it stands all 3 outcomes are possible

100+ overs in bowlers' legs and then you ask them to bowl another 80+ immediately... or give them at least a few hours rest and overnight to recover (is the thinking)

Yeah, plus if they have to bowl first on Friday and have another 2 days in the field....

(Ok likely they'll rest Anderson and bring in Broad, but Bess and Leach will almost certainly play and probably Archer too)

It seems odd to reduce your chances of a win and taking a series lead just because it may have an impact on the next game. Could end up 2-0 down as a result.

They have Stokes up their sleeve as well, 6 overs only so far, that looks deliberate, he's not played much yet, 3 more tests to go.

No no no no (to Baz)

Not enforcing follow on should **increase** the chance of winning. Although I'd have declared when Buttler got out to give myself a bit more time

The win is important, but think of it more like a league game where you can gamble everything on winning a match and taking 3 pts but you lose your star centre back and half your midfield through injury and go an awful run culminating in losing 3 home matches at Anfield....
