Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Thanks that's interesting - Vaughan doesn't make that list as it's a qualification of 50 scores of 50+ (and MV only has 35 - 18 100s), but would have a score of 50%.

Hence my gut feeling that he was one of the better convertors.

Bradman is 69% for comparison (again falls short of the 50 50s qualification)

Last long hard to read table after rf_fozzy's observation...

If sorted it by 100+ scores and Bradman rightfully gets top spot by a mile. Interestingly, Root has the worst conversion rate of anyone who has scored at least 18 centuries.

Thanks Davo. That's one hell of a lot of number crunching to prove what we all knew already ;-)

Root is first player born in the 1990s to play 100 tests.

Previous decades:

1950s: David Gower
1960s: David Boon
1970s: Sachin Tendulkar
1980s: Graeme Smith
1990s: Joe Root

I don't see why conversion rate is that important, surely his average of 50 compared to say Vaughan's 41 is a more important figure?

Chrisity - it shows that when someone gets in, they go on to score match defining (and possibly) winning innings.

A 60 or 70 rarely wins a test. A hundred often does.

I reckon it means if he were to have had a slightly better conversion rate his average would be pretty much stratospheric....you never know..he still might!

Do we think some of Root's recent conversions could be down to Kallis being in the dressing room?

So take Bairstow and Stokes as examples (similar batsmen with similar records):

Bairstow: 72 matches, 127inns, 4169 runs @ 35.03. 27 scores of 50+

Stokes: 68 matches, 122inns, 4428 runs @ 37.84. 32 scores of 50+

Both are all-rounders who contribute in the fielding side (Bairstow with the keeping/Stokes bowling) and both are excellent fielders.

Who has the bigger impact on matches?

Well Stokes has 10 centuries, so a conversion rate of 31.3%, Bairstow only 6, so 22.2%

Therefore my conclusion is that Stokes tends to play more match-winning innings.

Interestingly for the Buttler Fanatics.

Buttler: 50matches, 85inns, 2674 runs at 34.72. 20 scores of 50+, 2 100s. Conversion rate: 10%.

I think I stick by my conviction that Bairstow would be the better #7
