What's the spread on when Root will surpass Gooch's 8900 runs then. Needs 523 more to do so. 2nd test v NZ? |

Modern, media trained, bland. As it goes, DL is standing right by my old seat at in front of the Hays Close and of the pavilion (square leg with an rhb and the bowler at the river end). I moved a few years back because it felt more like a social gathering with a handy bar. Where I sit now (rhb cow corner if the bowler's at the river end) somewhere above DL's left ear in that interview) is arguably less 'atmospheric' but more cricket focused. |

Hmm. Maybe an interesting stat. Using the 100/50 method - is Joe Root the worst (England) convertor from 50->100? 20 tons and 49 50s (not inc the 100s) So a 100:50 ratio of ~0.5 And on that measure is Vaughan the best? 18 100s, 18 50s. Need someone to crunch the numbers please if you have time.... |

Can't get much more socially distanced than the crowd at the average 4-day county championship game, I would've thought, Greppers? Also the age profile means you'd all have been vaccinated by then anyway?

If Root bats to his current average, 2nd NZ is about right. But he might get rested? Or injured, or just have a bad trot? I'd say sometime during the India at home series.

The age profile, together with the Covid mortality stats probably means there will be even fewer in attendance?

If you use some sensible number of minimums, Dennis Amiss with 11 centuries and 10 fifties seems to be the best England player. If you don't impose any minimums, CAG "Jack" Russell scored 5 centuries and 2 fifties for England in the 1920s. Vaughan the best of "modern" players. Root is one of the all-time worst converters, but perhaps that's related to him having a test average above 50. If you take out those with fewer than 10 of each, Bradman on 29x 100s and 13x 50s will take some beating on the all-time list. Kohli seems to be best among current players. |
