I suspect Tufnell would get into the current team on bowling if taken in isolation. And I suspect he'd have taken more wickets in the current team.

It's difficult to judge a numbers only record across eras.

He would have also had to do far more work on both his fielding and batting to get to county standard in the modern era. So whilst he'd never have been Moeen in terms of his batting, he *should* be close to the Jack Leach model. Matthew Hoggard would be a good example.

What I think is certain is that Sum of parts of the 90s teams were far far far far below the current team.

Accepting that there would be little difference in, say, an Angus Fraser in terms of output (although he may have stayed fitter and had less wear and tear on hips etc), I wonder what central contracts might have done for the really gifted but not quite there. I was thinking immediately of PAJ DeFreitas but then thought of Ramprakash and Hick. Maybe 'no change' as the problem seemed to be the 4 inches between the ears, but who knows?

Tufnell with DRS would have twice as many wickets.

Good point Nico.

DRS has made a big difference.

Swann reckons he'd have substantially fewer wickets without it.

Oscar - James Vince - Mark Ramprakash comparison?

Hick I'm never sure about. Something didn't ever click with him and I don't think anyone's worked it out.

The residency qualification and years in county cricket hyping him up definitely piled the pressure on.

He may have had *some* more but of course the batsmen of the day would have quickly adapted, as the current crop have

Mind, I'm always amazed when I look at the stats that Ramps and Hick played as many tests as they did - 52 and 65 respectively.

I think Vince to Ramprakash is unfair. Ramps scored a hundred 100s. He had talent in spades. Agree with Hick though.

yes, Tuffers was pretty good really, born all, but so what, I don;t know about twice as many though, certainly a tidy number.

Must not under estimate just how much county cricket they used to play back then, probably ok for the batsmen, not the bowlers, how does Neil Foster from Essex stack up? Stats are probably not great but a pretty good bowler, he would have been much more looked after these days.
