Talking of technique failure, did anyone read that horribly sanctimonious piece in Monday's Times by Steve James (test average 17.8) about why Jonny Bairstow (test average 35.1) struggled?

When his bat was raised high, his hands were still actually very low when the ball was bowled, which meant that, unless those hands were pushed back again before playing a shot, he was often jabbing at the ball, especially in defence. This was why he was so often bowled through the gate in Test cricket.

In all seriousness, it is in the Test arena where strengths become weaknesses. Note the plan to the Sri Lankan opener where they targeted the hips and put a leg gully in. I would think he has scored hundreds of runs through there without ever thinking about it. Remember Graham Gooch vs Terry Alderman and the falling over the front leg. what had been a huge strength became a weakness... Oh and DI Gower flirting with anything in the cover drive/slip region

Haseem Habeeb was the future, once.....

Although there does seem to be a bit of a cluster of 'new Joe Roots' at the moment so we can almost afford one or two to go a bit Gary Ballance.

But (and sorry for the unmitigated pessimism Fozzy) we still have the Broad/Anderson sized hole to fill....father time is undefeated, and I just have the feeling he'll notch another couple of wins with Broad and Anderson at the worst possible time - in the middle of an Ashes series.

Ah yes. I am a bit worried that we are pinning our hopes on Jofra/Stone/Wood to fill the gap with express pace. Presumably the Overtons aren't a mile away from their thinking either. Worry is over ability plus fitness record (Wood/Stone).

I'd be happy enough to find the new Angus Fraser/Matthew Hoggard (both mentioned in recent dispatches).

Even poor old Varun Chopra was the future once.

I've not followed this, but what does Broad plan to do when he hangs up his spikes? I think he interviews really well. It'd be fun to have him behind a microphone now and then.

Well broad is substantially younger than Anderson and could play on for 5 years yet

Woakes, archer, wood, stone, Curran are possible replacements for starters.

And there isn't going to be am immediate identical replacement. If ever.

That's the nature of sport.

Australia never replaced warne and McGrath, Pakistan never replaced waqar and Wasim, west indies never replaced Walsh and Ambrose. Liverpool haven't replaced Gerrard.

Because you can't.
