My local hospital just published that they have had no covid admittances for 8 days now. Another friend based in Oxon (& a doctor) said they are only seeing 1-2 new cases a day for a population of 600,000+ over the last 2 weeks. Just a pity the news didn't write these good news stories.

The headlines we have had "major spike will happen after VE Day" ...result, no major spike. "Major spike likely after BLM protests" To date no major spike that I'm aware of. Now BBC has "Major spike after Liverpool fans celebrate".... It's no wonder people are starting to pay no heed to what they read. I think the phrase is Cry Wolf. I know the newspapers don't want to dismiss genuine localised infection hikes but all this doomongering makes people less likely to follow guidelines IMO than follow them. They are told rates will hike but look around them and don't see it so as time goes on they are less inclined to believe what they read.

We have gone a bit mad and booked into a hotel in Scarborough for a few days in July. We will be sensible, and are walkers not beach babes, so I hope we will be welcome. Travelling by bus and train as I don’t have a car yet so have bought face masks to wear. Not quite the holiday extravaganza we have been saving for two years for, for our 20th anniversary, but I am actually pathetically excited!

We have a higher than average incidence in Bedford at the moment and "they" are working hard to find out why. Maybe we're not seeing spikes as such after various events - but the gatherings could be contributing to the quite slow rate of decline of the number of infections. |

As I am in the vulnerable group I will continue to be cautious as this virus has not gone away it’s just gone quieter. I don’t want a holiday in hospital

Rosehip - where are you seeing the stats? I'd heard that the local authorities were finding it difficult to get their hands on the data.

Non-runner - Hope you have a great holiday - there is some excellent walking routes around that area - including the Cleveland Way and north York Moors. Only the brave venture into the North Sea at Scarborough..

It is clear that the virus is still with us, and that some increase in transmission is inevitable as we re-engage in economic and social activity. One crucial issue is whether or not local outbreaks can be identified quickly and contained. As I see it, in those countries that have implemented effective testing and tracing, the location of outbreaks has been identified (eg Xinfadu market in Beijing; the meat processing plant in Gütersloh, Germany; nightclubs in South Korea; specific suburbs in Melbourne, Australia; two UK visitors in NZ). In all these instances local measures (e.g. local lock-down) has been implemented. The crucial question is how successful these local measures are in preventing wider spread. I am a little concerned by recent relatively wide-spread transmission in Seoul, but it is too early to draw definite conclusions. Overall I do not think we should be panicking; more importantly, we should focus on effective test and tracing. |

- came from Eldest having been working in the hospital last week, combined with the Central Beds council update linking to a bedford borough one warning people to stay at home. A quick google doesn't find any data for this week, looks like up to mid-June there was a bit of a rise that worried. bbc.co.uk |
