He knows he needs to do something and he thinks he is a loveable rogue and if he comes along and has a josh with people then just like Brexit all will be good. He really has no idea just how toxic he and the tories are in scotland - even with those who are not in favour of Independence. |

Agree Baz, he doesn't want Scotland leaving the Union on his watch, that more than the Coronavirus response will bring him down, he has to be seen to be doing something, anything (but in vain I fear)

I think politicians of all persuasions need to set an example. The bottom line is that Boris' trips out of London are not "essential". Plus, it should be remembered that he doesn't travel alone. There iss a retinue of staff, press, etc. I don't think anyone in Scotland would decry him for not coming here, especially as vaccinations are a devolved matter. |

I attended a talk by Ben Goldacre today about the Opensafely project which has enabled secure and fast access to NHS data initially about Covid related issues but ultimately everything. They released this analysis of the vaccine rollout today. medrxiv.org |

He is going to charm the people of Scotland by donning a tam o'shanter and a kilt and rattling out a few misquoted lines from Burns followed by an unfortunate gaff about Culloden. Support for independence will collapse overnight. |

In normal times, any Westminster PM's job description would include visits to all four countries currently in the Union. But these aren't normal times. Vaccination will carry on in Scotland regardless of whether he visits or not.

Difficult though I find it to support Johnson, I do think that hiding away in London wouldn't be entirely appropriate for someone in his position. Travel to visit different areas of the country is very much part of his job, just like journalists also travel to cover stories and lorry drivers travel to deliver their goods etc. There are arguments either way but I wouldn't condemn him for coming to a slightly different judgement about the details of his travel arrangements. It's hardly a Barnard Castle situation. |
