Anyone got any insights into whether the messages in the UK this week are mirrored by messages in Spain / France about a fortnight ago? There is a sense that we're a couple of weeks behind them at this point, and the only real touchstone I have is from watching the Tour de France where (masked) crowds were lining the roads with enthusiasm in some places, but in others there were strict controls in place limiting spectating etc.

We failed in Feb / Mar to learn the lessons from Europe quickly enough, I hope at this point we're being more receptive to doing things in line with (or deliberatley different to) Europe where we can see what impact their actions are or are not having.

Almost twenty minutes of bickering between M Gove and the Radio 4 interviewer - not the best use of the licence fee...and, imo, I was no wiser, simply because the latter asked questions that the former was under strict orders not to answer. Maybe he didn't know. Maybe this afternoon's COBRA meeting will. Yes, MPs will get a chance to bay across the chamber...but a vote?

Remember also that where Barcelona has a 2359 pub close that would be the equivalent of 2000 here as they go out much later. Of course ‘sale for consumption off premises’ should remain open alongside microbrewies and off licenses as they are just a shop at that point and you’d have to close tesco?

Nothing short of a police state is going to stop young people who want to party more than keep others safe and those numbers of non-compliance were surely always built into the modelling. The much bigger concern is that people with positive tests often don't self isolate.

Larks, yes we should look to France I think. The Sage 'potential' projection of 50k cases a day by mid-October does not look likely when comparing to how France is going - maybe more like 10k cases a day with resulting double figures deaths a month later.

we are going to need a whole lot more than closing pubs early and reversing the advice on working from home.

Aha, the breakaway thread! Thanks Fetch for redirecting me.

What do we think about the 10pm curfew for pubs and restaurants? Draconian edicts curtailing our civil liberties or insufficient restriction failing to control the virus spread?

Midnight in Spain is *early*. A few years ago on holiday, with all day activity, we (Brits, Americans) went out for dinner at 7pm and nothing was open!! About 9 and 10pm things were opening (kids kicking a ball about while parents ate and drank), still going about midnight. That was just normal (summer) dinner time. Of course, they had been asleep 12-2pm. Can't compare times, and possibly even behaviours, between UK and southern Med countries, I don't think.

They also don't seem to get falling down drunk. Young or old. It's not cool. In my very limited experience.

a friend of mines son was dropped off at uni (leeds) for first time at end of last week. Nothing going so what happens? the students who are there have a party. They have nothing else to do. The warden broke it up and took all their names (he gave the name of his friend who as it happened was doing exactly the same thing having been dropped off in Nottingham). What they did was wrong, but they have nothing to do in a deserted university, this is a problem that is only going to get worse
