I love the end of marathons when I have been treating them as a training run (like Monday) so for the last hour I am passing people galore then the last few miles I sometimes pick the pace up. Everyone around me is going so slow and I feel like I am flying, I am not but I am in comparison to others!!!
Hellen you & me - for my last 2 i have followed a paceband -roughly- gone off sub pace but not too fast , and kept near pace, and passed loads in the last 6-8, and Pb d twice. Preparation, Knowing whats coming and not going too fast early , thats my method. Now for Berlin. Deeside off road tonight was testing, very uneven at times, 4.9miles @8:11 pace , pleased with that.
i am doing loads of marathons/ultras at the mo Homer, Chester was 11 this year. However, at the start of the year I was injured so I am not going very fast!
Yes, I think there were a lot of bad pacers cos even before I picked the pace up I was picking people off. I think from half way only a few people passed me yet I passed a lot.
just down to expereince really, for fleetwood and in anticpation of hot weather I'd set of far slower than at chester. trying to finish in good form - even if your in a shitty state a couple of days later:)
I intended to go at even pace (8 min/mile), but went off too quick. Felt comfortable for first 16 miles, then slowed after that. Ended up with average 7:58 per mile, but if I'd done it to plan, would probably have been quicker.
As I posted on a different thread earlier: if even-pace is good enough for an Olympic 800m winner, it's good enough for me -
