Just watched the short promo video on their Facebook page. They're clearly taking a leaf from Stirling's book by playing on the history and the sights (presumably with an eye to attracting nostalgic expats and oversees visitors. It looks good!

That said, I still dread the long slog up to Gosford House having toiled on that section both times I ran Edinburgh. The gale-force winds of 2015 weren't the organisers fault however, nor can I blame them for my lack post-Manchester recovery in 2016.

It's 90m descent. Is that permitted? I thought the rule was 1 metre per km, so 42 metre descent maximum? What was the old descent? Sh*t, is it not going to count for a PB because it will show as a "Downhill Marathon" in Power of 10? :-) G

It still irks me that Powerof10 shows Loch Ness as 'MarDH'.

I think Edinburgh will be now too Fergus. If they are right and it's 90m net descent then that is over the permitted 1m per km. Edinburgh will show as MarDH too and not be allowed for PBs! :-O Surely that's a major "own goal" by GSI. No point in calling it the "fastest marathon course in UK" or whatever they're trying to claim if it's invalid?

Does anyone know what the descent on the old course was? I looked at Bazo's Garmin log and it said 181m climb, 217m descent = 36m net descent. Is that right? If so, explains why it used to be OK (under 42m net descent). I can't believe there's 181m of ascent in the old course. Or is that just Garmin inaccuracy?

Loch Ness may be net downhill but it's bliddy hard. A flat London is much easier course, imho. :-) G

That's a good point actually. The current route started in 2009 I think, but due to it being too much downhill the London Road start for faster runners was introduced from 2010. London Road doesn't have that extra drop down that regents Road does and was within Legal limits

That canter down the Mound will scupper a lot of folk early doors. And climb back up Jeffrey Street won't be popular, I wouldn't think either! :-) G

As a MarDH, Loch Ness might not show up as PB on Powerof10 but it’s still acceptable for most Good For Age criteria I believe.

Net. I put the route into ridewithgps, as best as I can judge from the PDF, and it says net descent of 86m, total ascent/descent 204/290. The start is 95m, the end 8m, near enough, so it's clearly double the 1m/km limit. Hints that HG's numbers are probably in the right ballpark, too. ridewithgps.com

90m [net] descent was their own statement in the announcement. I have asked a question on their Facebook page (where all the trailers for the announcement had appeared) - no response. Will let you know if I see anything. :-) G
