Are there stairs in from an upper floor? How was it accessed in the centuries before lifts?

Good to see an old school Bravomat style pot in the picture (another lower tech solution which may come back, I reckon).

Dougal, there are no stairs from the ground floor to level 1, but there are from level 1 to 2, all four of them.

I'm guessing the stairs used to be where the lift is now?

Badger, you should know it's not as logical as that. There is perfectly good stairs access via the Old Schools front door and either the Syndicate Room or the East Room. Unfortunately the former is often in use for meetings and latter is currently occupied as offices by part of the HR department, so is not a through route.

The lift, I believe, was installed as a way of providing disabled access to the Combination Room, but then morphed into the default entrance.

Dear colleagues,

Several marches, demonstrations and events are scheduled to take place in central London throughout the day on Friday, 29 March.

The areas where most of these will take place are Parliament Square, Whitehall, Trafalgar Square and Leicester Square.

Our building security will continuously monitor the situation and implement a building lockdown if needed.

If you have meetings with external guests, or non-essential deliveries scheduled for Friday, you may wish to rearrange these. If this is not possible please make sure to alert reception in advance. You might also like to inform your visitors.

It actually seemed quite daft enough to provide disabled access by removing all other ways in and out bar defenestration, to be fair, Glenn!

I’m very please to say that the Combination Room lift has been fully repaired and is back in use to all levels.

Best wishes

[Till the next time]
