Just so long as Glenners never comes across someone who refuses to use email on the grounds s/he has a phone...

Anyone who doesn't use email here should be given the boot.

Philosophically I'd agree with you, practically, well, when we were moving into the University, there were communications printed out and stuck in envelopes to everybody on the grounds that there are staff members who have never, ever, read their email.

I'd suggest that verbal communication is far more effective than email. Apart from anything else, it generally cuts out all the crap people send via email without giving it a second thought.

There’s a professor I know who never replies to emails. Not sure if he reads but he won’t respond. Glad he’s not my supervisor:)

I know one who generally only replies if he disagrees with you. Perish the thought he's swerving responsibility if he says yes and it goes wrong.
I rather agree with flanker these days, not least because 5 minutes conversation can get you as far as ten email exchanges taking an hour between each cycle.

I look on Skype to see whether a colleague is marked as available, then go and speak to them.

I fear my point is being misunderstood. I want an email that reads “call me when you get the chance”, not to conduct the entire discussion by email.
