Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

I guess they're removing old stuff (Grounded Events era) from the website and building it up with LME. Does seem a bit odd that they took it down completely for 2 days, seems like someone screwed up while releasing the update.

People keep asking on Facebook and they reply with "The arrangements for Park and Ride are being finalised and we’ll email everyone as soon as further information is available."

If I was relying on the P&R I'd be getting worried with only 3 1/2 weeks to go.

I am hoping to get my usual lift to Withdean and walk in from there. The biggest concern seems to be those getting to the start by train, given that there is usually a limited service the day after a train strike.

In the early days, Southern agreed to lay on extra trains on marathon morning. These filtered out and people were arriving on packed trains. This resulted in Preston Park Station being closed since 2015 as it took ages for everyone to leave the platform.

Apart from 2017, when Brighton Station was heaving thanks to someone being spotted on the line and trains were delayed, leaving by train hasn't been too bad.

Every Facebook entry by BMW seems to be followed with Park & Ride comments. I wonder whether more people are wanting Park & Ride this year especially as the morning after a train strike tends to have a reduced service.

Whatever you think of Grounded Events, you knew what to expect come race day. Remember their course and pre-event videos that came out every couple years? Still no start or finish maps, which is poor considering that the finish has been moved to Hove Lawns. To be fair, at least we have a race and it isn't easy to take over a big event with just a few months' to go. I'm just thinking, "let's get this one finished and hope for a much improved and better organised event in 2024."

I don't run silly distances like marathon, 10k's my limit these days, but have volunteered every year but 1 for BM. If it's a disaster it doesn't matter too much to me as I haven't trained for months but it obviously does matter for a huge number of runners.

I'm trying to be patient and supportive and remember that it isn't easy to take over a big event at short notice but I'm quite concerned about the way they are (aren't!) organising it, I expected LME to be on top of it very quickly.

A lot of staff left GE just before and during lockdown and their replacements weren't as good, some (only 1 I know of but maybe more) have transferred to LME; junior admin person, not a director!!

They don't seem to have enough staff to answer emails, Twitter, Facebook, I'd have thought they'd have someone / a team who's first job of the day was to reply to everything, but they don't seem to be replying.

I've been trying since January to get confirmation whether they want a group of us who've all done nearly every year and only get vague replies like "we're looking at how many people we need", meanwhile the on line sign up shows about 500 vacancies for vols, they've (finally!) mailed parkruns asking us to share their vol sign up link, I suggested they do that weeks ago, and the website no longer has a link for vol sign up. <roll eyes emoji>

Over the years GE managed to P off many of the core volunteers in the city - the people without whom most of the running clubs, training groups, parkruns, races wouldn't happen - I was expecting LME to be courting those people to get them involved again but they haven't.

Either they have a load of volunteers or paid people who we don't know about or they're going to be in a big hole and with 3 weeks to go I don't know how they are going to get out of it.

I had high hopes when LME were announced but so far have been disappointed.

I have received an e-mail from Southern Rail with regards to the strike which includes Thursday 30 March and especially Saturday 1 April:

RMT members at train operating companies (including Southern, Gatwick Express, Thameslink and Great Northern) will be on strike on Saturday 1 April. Regrettably, due to strike action, services will be limited across our network with trains finishing earlier, and no trains at all in some areas. Where services are operating, you should expect disruption, longer waiting times and busy trains. Only around one third of our usual train service will be running.

The day after a strike, trains will start much later than normal with no services on some routes before 7am.

We're really sorry for the inconvenience this strike action will cause, and we urge you to plan ahead and make alternative arrangements. If you need to travel on the above dates, always check your whole journey immediately before at National Rail.

I had to laugh at the BMW Facebook comments.

Not everyone is happy about the Brighton landmark in question on this year's finishers medal, saying that it looks like a part of a cat's anatomy. Elsewhere, there are still moaners wanting to know what the Park & Ride permit will look like. The best response seems to be 'a yellow envelope stuck to your windscreen!'

Last long run(!!!) before the marathon, time to taper now.

Unfortunately due to an injured foot, today was a walk - 18 miles in the bag and 5.5 hours on my feet.

Hopefully my foot will heal in time for the marathon 🤞

Ha. My training has been all over the place. Started on a marathon training plan but threw in a tough hard trail half marathon early Feb, which broke me.
However with a 46 mile ultra last weekend, mid Feb saw me doing long trail training runs.

So whilst I’ve knocked out a 27 and a 47 mile trail run in the past month… fuck all at as a long marathon-esque training run.

Is fully expecting Brighton to be a shambles where I blow up and crash.

Oh well :)

Well done, guys. We're nearly there.

No running this week due to a sore calf which I felt after only three miles in last Sunday. I hope to get a run in next weekend or I might just play safe and just do the final taper. Nothing special planned for race day. If the calf doesn't play up, I'll probably just run to double figures and then run-walk the rest.

Thanks to the new course, the last of the hills is just before halfway whereas it used to be three miles earlier. Mustn't grumble too much now that we have a marathon after all.
