I am going on holiday for 10 days in Italy and I am renting a car. I am aware that the drink driving laws have tightened a lot and want to avoid trouble. I have seen that there are now a few breathalysers on sell for people use. Has anyone got any experience with them?

I have some from Halfords and as lammo wrote they have never been out of the packet. They came with a "foreign" travel pack from that store which had a bunch of stuff to cover most of the near European requirements. My son works for the store just so you know my bias.

Same here, bought one from Halfords, never used. IIRC one of the the hi viz vests in the glovebox came from a Prudential Ride London I never actually did, and an old parkrun hi-viz which had the wrong sponsors' name on it ;-)

Easiest way to avoid trouble is not to drink & drive surely?

agree ... but imagine you drink the night before, depending how much you had, you don't know how much there is left in your system the day after! Or if you drink at lunch time, can you drive in the evening?
So safest is yes not to drink at all, but over 10 days holiday in italy seems, a bit difficult. Other option is not to drive :-)
