Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

That’s massively impressive.

I know many of the options can be dismissed as farcical but the number of options of visiting each Wainwright is 214! which is unfathomably large.

That 214! is only relevant if you take a very theoretical approach to it, of course. Would anyone not put Nethermost Pike and Dollywaggon next to each other?

(Answering my own question: possibly. I did meet a chap in the Dog & Gun who said he was doing the Wainwrights in alphabetical order and I am pretty sure he was serious. Although this was not all in one outing!)

Sure, but there are efficient algorithms that can calculate the optimal route in something like (a multiple of) 2^214 calculations which is infinitesimally small in comparison :-)

I wonder how the algorithm accounts for known patches of boggy terrain, minor undulations, runners trods, impassable crags etc

They will use the standard fell runner equation that involves Pi(es) and ale.

Yes.

I think, from my very non-technical brain point of view, there is a lot that the spreadsheets etc can do. But they won’t be able to match on the ground knowledge of runners and supporters.

NE take care and enjoy. I'm watching the weather for different reasons and both the forecasts for the weekend and my watch flashing a storm warning on the walk back from the pub this evening are posing many questions with regards to kit and travelling fast in high exposed places.

You know it’s serious when the carbo loading in the pub starts on a Tuesday night ;-)
