Yes, you could do that. Drop down the Terrace Route to Wrynose, then slog back up the road a bit until you pick up the path that takes you around the back of Harter Fell - it actually picks up the L100 route. Up and over Harter Fell, get Demming Crag (a Birkett) on the way down then I guess it would be down the road to Cockley Beck (assuming that's where you started from). Another option might be to forget about Scafell and Slight Side, so come off the back of Scafell Pike via Rough Crag, get Pen, then drop down the valley to Lingcove Bridge. You could thennab Hard Knott and Border End from the north before dropping back to Wrynose. Both would be a grand day out :-)

These all sound fabulous days out - I need a break without son and dog, those days are too long to put up with "mum! why do you walk so fast, How much further is it?" and to worry about finding a difficult stile or too many sheep.

[I wanted to climb Kinder Scout on my own last summer, husband (not an outdoors person) and son insisted that I'd not be safe on my own and they should go with me - took twice as long to do the loop as it should have :( ]

Never come off down Rough Crag/Pen before. I assume you follow the NE ridge down? It looks vaguely doable on the map/aerial shots! And there's always the path up to the Broad Crag - Pike col as an alternative (and iirc loose) way down.

The descent I had in mind from Rough Crag is the one used on the Old County Tops race. From memory, you go roughly SE from the summit and pick up a descent line that weaves its way down a number of rocky terraces before you get onto easier (but steep) terrain. It's one of those that you have to be a bit careful, but is absolutely OK is you keep your wits about you - the dodgy bits are very obvious. I did get the a description of the right way to do it from Yiannis and followed it faithfully, so I could get a bit of mappage that shows this if you decide to do it. You would have to deviate a little bit off-piste to grab Pen of course.

Actually, on the OCT a lot of people don't even try to find this descent line and simply go back to Little Narrow Cove (the col between Broad Crag and Scafell Pike) before dropping straight down to Eskdale, this is obv. a lot slower though and it would make Pen much more difficult.

Cheers NE. Didn't know the name of that col :) Far too long since I've had a prolonged play on the Central fells; really must put that right soon as my memory of how it all fits together is getting very flaky!

Anyone else noticed ‘Lucian’ posting on the FRA Forum about what sounds at best a very off-the-cuff attempt tomorrow?

Yes. To be honest, I thought it was a wind-up to start with, now I'm not so sure.

My initial thought was a wind-up too. Three or four years ago definitely. How far they going to get ACW? Wasdale? Part way up Sca Fell?

If it's not a wind up and I'm stil 50:50 tbh.To get to Wasdale you've first got to find the trod down Yewbarrow! Now the bracken is up that isn't straight forward (far harder going down than up) if you don't know what you're looking for and Q&A on the Forum would suggest he doesn't. I also suspect that just following a GPX blindly (as he has said is the plan) is going to lead to several moments of "down there?? really!!" e.g. Red Gully on Kirk Fell or onto Billy's rakes on Bowfell never mind if they've got one that takes them down the scree descent off Gable.....

I'd like to see the tracker. I suspect there might be some unique lines! ;-)
