I am shocked to hear how things went yesterday and am really sorry for anyone caught up in the problems. I think I got off lightly at Cardiff!

It's sickening to hear the organisers hailing the event as a "major success". What would it take for them to describe it otherwise - a fatality? We know it can be done, but successfully organising large races is horrendously difficult and organisers have to learn from their mistakes. In describing it as a "major success", their message is that what happened out there yesterday was pretty damn good. So good, in fact, that there'll be even more runners next year. Utter lunacy.

I'd suggest they take a year out to organise a race with a much smaller field, and build up from there. Given what happened, I don't think there's any shame in that. Given their comments, the likelyhood is that they'll do the exact opposite.

I will avoid this race like the plague. What a great shame.

Scrub this one off wish list. Another year of reading reports of a poorly organised race.

I ran the Manchester 10k earlier this year and it was perfectly done. I knew from the moment that I signed up to do this one that it wasn't going to be well organised. If anything they need more colours, gaps between each colour going off, more roads so that you are not squeezed onto one side of th road. and I don't know if it was me but did they start late? I don't think hardly anyone was aware that the warm up had started. I enjoyed most of it but I couldn't agree more that it is not fit for purpose. I think this should be fed back to them. Not a good experiance for my first half marathon but at least it hasn't put me off doing another one.

Steve Hollingworth, Birmingham City Council director of sport and events, said: “Overall we have had great feedback about this year’s course for the EDF half marathon and we would like to congratulate all participants. That said, we do acknowledge the need to fine-tune the event for next year."

I typed up the results from the Birmingham Half this morning for Athletics Weekly (part time job I do on the train to work) and was shocked at the discrepancy between some of the gun/chip times which pointed to bad pen organisation (sadly, it's the "gun" times which count for ranking purposes). Felt very sorry for some people who'd easily have got ranked on chip time, but were 6-7 minutes off on gun time.

El bee, Can I suggest you write a letter to Athletics Weekly along similar lines to what you wrote in the article? I think someone may just sit up and take note then.

Steve Hollingworth needs to read the 80+ race reviews on Runners World. They certainly don't reflect the 'great feedback' he suggests.

Re. serious injuries, have a look at Monster Feet's blog, looks like some poor woman was pretty badly hurt.

Sounds like a shockingly badly organised race all round.
