I have some difficulty with recognising real life faces. Like Roo, I think it is because it is uncomfortable for me to look into strangers' eyes which means I don't see their whole face (for some reason I seem to be fairly fine with close friends or people I have known for a very long time). A trick with remembering a new person's name is to say their name 3 times in quick succession in a conversation, although with a lot of other things to concentrate on at the same time that may not be easy. |

Interesting comments, thanks all. She is fine with close friends, but we've had a chat and apparently the recognition thing has happened a few times that she can remember. I'll suggest the name trick to her too.

It’s not uncommon for people with autism to struggle with this. I personally tend to struggle when someone is out of context which suggests I’m using other cues. |

I'm like RunnyBunny and confuse people on telly all the time. I hardly watch dramas because I can't tell who's who and, unless I'm about to find out whodunnit and why, I'm not interested in people's lives. If I see a child I have taught out of school, I sometimes recognise the fact that I have taught them but couldn't tell you when - or who they are.

In September last year we were told it would be a 22-24 month wait for an ASD assessment for D1. Today we were told that the wait is up to 30 months (from original referral).

It's diabolical, it's so unfair as until you have the assessment all doors regarding help are closed

We decided to go private for our eldest as the wait was similar. Large scale study looking for autistic people and their families to enrol: spectrum10k.org |

Maddox is in the middle of ‘assessment’ I asked for a referral July 2019, seen for a short meeting with autism dr July 2020. He referred to speech and language who saw him in July this year. We will now be waiting for the dr to visit him in school as that’s also what he said he wanted to do! I waited 18 months for my assessment! |

We waited 2 years. The waits are shocking, and I'm not surprised they're getting worse. It's such a huge chunk of a young person's life.

Luckily up here support in school is not dependent on a diagnosis. Often families wait years for a diagnosis. It can give access to some other services but often makes very little difference.
