So EDMR music is the sort of music used when you treat yourself at the spa to a massage that doesn't sort your calf's out properly but you do finish up feeling completely zoned out.

So, given that running for me is often an excuse to empty my mind and de-stress - I thought to myself - why not have a go at EDMR music instead of ACDC/Europe/96BPM and indeed Radio2 of an evening with their happy hour.

It's got no beat and it's just gentle wishy washy sounds - hows that going to make a difference eh ?

But it did.

As my breathing and steps had nothing to grab onto - it just flowed, I was relaxed, my brain stopped thinking about the zillions of things I'm dealing with (I've not found the Fetch divorce thread yet - is there one ?) much much faster than ever and didn't re-fill, and it was zen empty for about 4 miles of cross country and paths - I was about 30seconds a mile faster than my recent efforts.

Granted I slept well last night - so yes that always helps - but seriously - I've not had a run this smooth and positive and just flowing for *YEARS*.

So please can we do an experiment and post back here if you're a run with music kind of person - search up EDMR on your spotify/apple/google music stick some on for your run, and let us know how you get on....

Thoughts and experiences and ideas please - because it's so counterintuitive I can't believe it worked so well !

Look forwards to your insights....

Nope - but I have tried the related Binaural beats (have you come across them? Link here with a bit on brooke-randolph.com ) Not tried it with running as I'm currently broken. But they definitely put you into a zone.

Ooh, this sounds interesting. Will try it on my next run. God knows I need something to inject a bit of speed.

Sorry, I don't run with headphones. Will be interested in the findings of the experiment! :-) G

HappyG(rrr) - I'm lucky as I have bone conducting Shokz, and also 95% of my runs are on rural country paths, fields, and footpaths - not on pavements in towns.

Have a listen to it when you're just chilling in the house before a run for about half an hour - and see if it enhances the run ?

No outdoor running scheduled today, but tried it on a treadmill while I was at the gym. It didn't seem to work for me on that, but it might have been the track. It seemed biased towards my left ear. I picked a Spotify EDMR playlist. I can imagine it would work better outside, somewhere with some pleasing scenery.

I had a bit of a nose at peer-reviewed journals and couldn't find much on it, although there was an article that didn't seem peer-reviewed that suggested it might have benefits in physical activity, and it seems to be used in music therapy. I've got a Zoom meeting with a couple of music-in-exercise psychologists on Monday, so will see if anything's on their radar.

I don’t run with music, if I do need a distraction I like a podcast. But I’m surprised by the results, when common wisdom is banging beats for running!

As far so know there isn’t a divorce thread (maybe there should be one) but there is a single thread which has intermittent periods of activity, many of the singlets (and no longer singles like me but I still lurk) have been through breakups/divorces

Meglet thanks for the suggestion - will go and lurk a bit over there. Weird to be able to put myself in that world now !
I also like a podcast for distraction, diary of a CEO on 1.25 speed has some interesting stuff, but the thing about the EMDR wasn't there as a conscious distraction - it was more like background music - I didn't really listen to it which was also a weird thing. Just noticed I was absolutely flying !

RunnyBunny oh that would be interesting zoom - let us know if anything comes of it. I was surprised by the results - might be a function of my circumstances/current background stress levels, but it was very counter-intuitive, but I would say outside has more of a chance than treadmill - where I usually watch telly.
