Ive just signed up again to the Manchester Marathon next year and am wanting to go into the gym and use weights in order to strengthen my legs but am scared of either looking a berk or doing the wrong stuff ! Last year I completed the marathon in 4hrs 52 with injury and I want to be faster this year and pain free !.( I did damage to my periformis area ) At the mo Im running 4/5 times a week, swim 3 times a week and pole dance once for upper body strength. Can anybody help ??

I dont think you necessarily need weights work to run a marathon
you do need lots of long runs and you might be better off dropping some of the cross training so you are able to do that
Not sure what your running programme was before for the first marathon

Blimey, don't mention the pole dancing with certain Fetchies around
Welcome to Fetch btw, and congrats on your first marathon
There are a million ways to train for a marathon. I agree with Hippo (she's done more marathons than most people on this site).
I've found weights help now I've moved back to shorter distances, with more strength around the hip flexor, hamstring and core areas most beneficial. That's just me though.
You may want to find some stretches that target your piriformis (the yoga pigeon position is one).

I don't think you need weights to strengthen your legs, running should do that. I use weights to build lean muscle mass, and to strengthen my core area and upper body. Do you have trainers at your gym? It's best to speak to one of them and be shown how to do weights properly so that you don't either waste your time or injure yourself.

Speak to the trainers at the gym, making sure they are level 3 qualified, not level 2. They should be able to make an all over body program for you for your overall strength and fitness. I agree with the core area being most important and upper body helps when you feel like your legs don't want to move, pump the arms and the legs will follow!

Hippo, i followed Runners world marathon schedule for my last one but unfortunately pulled my injury in Jan trying to avoid an ignorant dogwalker who didnt wind the lead in on a bridle path grrr ... the longest distance I ran before was 19 ish miles, I have kept up with my long runs on a sunday morning max 15 miles.
