Imagine if any of these space based stories used real physics, there wouldn't be much going on. Over 4 years to the next nearest star at light speed and, oh dear, no suitable sized planet in a Goldilocks zone? If I want to boldly go and find a short cut to the Kessel run, then I'm happy to hang any disbelief on a very high hook.

Have you tried the Expanse yet, Groundhog? It stays pretty close to actual physics and is an amazing series. Well worth a go.

And I see your "Harry Potter in Space" and raise you "Hornblower in Space", but so what?

Warp Drive doesn't actually make the ships travel FTL. Instead it generates a warp bubble that bends space-time to make it appear as though they are travelling faster than light.

Expanse started out really well, but became tedious for me. I wanted to like it and probably ought to get back to it.

Actually it was originally 'Gunsmoke in space' that inspired the original series: "A wagon train to the stars" as Gene Rodenberry described it.

However, Star Trek II:WOK did indeed take inspiration from Hornblower - Nicholas Meyer was quite explicit about that.
