Oh bollox Brexit. Do you still have E111? IF not, be prepared to pay and reclaim from travel insurance. (You will probably pay a small "ticket" in any case as Italians do.)

Sarah, try a pharmacy. Lots of countries let pharmacists prescribe antibiotics for simple stuff. I think I got steroids and antibiotics in Sardinia (but it may have been Malta, can't remember!)

Thanks for the advice everyone. I went to a pharmacy on Wednesday and they can’t give antibiotics without a prescription. Things have deteriorated since then despite drinking gallons of water. I’m now sitting in a hospital clinic waiting to be seen.
I do have a GHIC card.
