ITG - I always found it good to have a trusted & knowledgeable facilitator who could manage the chat & Q&A and leave the chair & speakers free to speak. I was often in that role when my mgr, or one of my team was speaking.

The systems we used would have allowed the poster to be ejected - and stopped from rejoining, as well as being named and shamed - and/or a follow up to them and their organisation.

But having said that the worst we had was 'tiresome repetitive questioning' or sometimes emotional outbursts about downsizing/job moves, nothing of that abusive nature.

Surprised and disappointed that it still goes on.

Absolutely deplorable, but as Dipps says, depressingly not surprising.

Which is in no way saying it's something we should tolerate of course.

ITG
The organiser of the whole event was online and dealing with the tech as well as he could but he was as shocked and unprepared as I was. He couldn't delete the chat but threw out the person concerned but he hadn't noticed the abuse was also in the Q&A. I was trying to keep a straight face and manage the panel (praying that whoever was talking would just keep talking while I tried to sort it out) and I asked the moderator to move the "questions" to the "declined" box so they would not be visible.

I wrote to all the panelists thanking them and apologising for the abuse, adding that if they hadn't seen it, it was better that way, but I didn't indicate it was addressed at anyone in particular so if she missed it, she will never know.

ITG that's awful - well done for handling it though.
I am glad it's the weekend, I can ignore work emails and my lap top for 48 hours...

Welcome to the 700 miles in 2020 thread, everybody welcome. The thread motto is:
'700 miles is neither necessary nor sufficient'
