Pothunter
Morning! We’re off to the Cutty Sark this morning. Taking the opportunity of reduced ticket numbers to see some of the classic tourist attractions.

Throat is now just moderately sore after staying indoors chewing antihistamines all day yesterday. So I went to play on the bouncy floor, it was sweaty even now the weather is cooler.

I need some collective Fetchie advice. I've been asked to help put together a flexibility and strength routine for a man in his 50s that he could do at home. He's overweight but in general good health, and almost entirely sedentary during the day (because of his job).

His main goal is to improve his overall health and fitness, rather than weight loss, although that will come as he gets fitter. He was quite fit and active when younger, but is not (and will never be) a runner. Walking is OK, and there might be the possibility of introducing some cycling at some point. He hates swimming (and his local pools are all still shut, anyway).

I've suggested he buy a basic set of weights, but would also welcome some advice on the most useful/effective bodyweight exercises that he can start with in the meantime. I thought squats, lunges, press ups, plank, and maybe tricep dips? In terms of flexibility I suggested a beginners' yoga programme - maybe not Adriene, I think he'd find her a bit irritating, but I'm sure I can dig one out.

(My suggestion that he find a PT was met with some resistance so that's not on the agenda at the moment although I'll revisit it in future.)

If there are any good plans out there that people can recommend I'd be interested, in much the same way we recommend marathon plans to each other.

OK, and now I'm off for my first run in what seems like forever. Got to keep up my end of the bargain ...

Paula: people pretty much never follow programmes at home. I’m highly motivated to exercise and I wouldn’t in a million years do burpees in the kitchen without someone telling me to do them!

There are loads of instructors doing online classes, either live or recorded. I pay £25 a month to one instructor for classes on Facebook live. She does body blast (HIIT class with weights and bands), Pilates and Zumba (which I don’t bother with). It’s much cheaper than a PT and is great exercise with zero embarrassment. It’s also fun! I prefer real life classes but these work for the moment. I know a couple of other instructors doing similar, and many will offer a free trial class too.

I was going to ask politely the same as fleece - how self-motivated is he?
I was thinking Linds and Teebee's online bootcamp could be the thing (though maybe that is women only).
He should prob mix cardio and weight/strength but body weight is fine for now.

Kettlebells are a fab, cheap way to add on in due course. You only need 1 to get going.

I know I need the motivation of a class, online or real life, to make me do a proper programme. But what you've suggested so far sounds very sensible and do-able Paula.

Lovely swim this morning with my sister, though the cloud seems disappointingly thick today. Msybe it'll burn off later.

um
Paula - who's asking? and what is his real motivation?
I'd suggest something simple to start with .. eg a gently increasing walking plan, including hills if possible.
And some very basic exercises - eg sit-ups, press ups (real or 'cheat' depening on his ability), squats. Also 'increasing', starting from whatever his current ability is (whether 5 or 10 etc), building to (eg) 3 x 10 reps (or whatever).
Monitor for 2-4 weeks and then add more exercises, equipment or variety, or specific goal focused activity?
