Maybe a better question is, what proportion of people generally, given infinite time to try things out and train for a reasonable period, are actually capable of getting to national / elite standard at a sport *if* they can find the one that they happen to be particularly suited to. My physique (5ft8, BMI naturally (so I tell myself) towards the top of the recommended range) clearly would never make an elite sprinter. Or a high jumper. But maybe it would be "fine" for shooting, or canoeing, or table tennis. I don't think I have any natural gifts that would tend me towards those sports, but without being given the chance to try at all sports I'll likely never know which one I'd be best at (relatively). That said, all of the "good" sports men and women I've ever known seem to be excellent at just about most sports, but outstanding at a single one. So maybe most of us are just "ok" at many sports and "good" at one, and that's as good as we can ever get. |

I'm glad that 73% of Brits have an understanding on what it takes. I wonder what the Venn diagram with the 23% & Voting for reform looks like ? |

This is like the 10% of Americans that think they can win a fight with a bear (no weapons allowed). Conversely a surprising number of brits didn't think they could beat a goose. |

I used to be quite a good shot (many years ago), if I had a couple of years to practice intensively, and the right equipment and coaches, I'm sure I could become a lot better than I used to be. Still probably far from good enough for the Olympics, though 😂 |

I've got a friend whose daughter has represented GB in basketball at under 16s and under 18s level over the last couple of years. Does 'knowing someone who might have a chance' count? Appreciate that GB basketball are some way off qualifying for the games, of course...

This looks to be a prime example of the Dunning-Kruger effect: Unskilled people grossly overestimate their ability in a specific task, whereas highly skilled people generally underestimate their ability. An interesting counter balance to that survey would be to ask the 10,000 Olympians whether they thought 4 years ago they would be participating in Paris. I’d anticipate the vast majority would say no.
