Welcome to the May round-up. I was going to do a boxing theme, but some people are understandably a bit squeamish about people being paid to thump each other, so we’ll go with my addiction to hashing, in what many may see as my latest doomed attempt to convince you all that it’s the way forward.
It all kicked off in Malaysia in 1938 as British colonial officers noticed they were all getting a bit portly on ex-pat luxury, and decided to make a version of the paper chase, running from the mess hall, or ‘Hash House’
Today there’ll be a hash running from a pub near you, leaving trails of flour to be followed, featuring a motley crew of runners of all ages and scaring suspicious locals with he fearsome markings, but more of this during the roundup, which I’ll use to explain the terms

FRBs, the front runners. We’re all out for a bit of fun, and it’s no good if everyone who can actually run is back in the boozer, has finished their pint and is driving off before more conventionally able hashers, and walkers have even got to the half-way point. It’s because of FRBs that he trail has to be laid carefully, with tricks and feints, like false trails, and fish-hook symbols to send them to the back of the pack. It’s the FRBs’ responsibility to find the real trail and call the rest of us ‘on-on’

Hares, the trail-layers. In the most traditional form of hashing, the live trail, the hare will set off five or ten minutes before the pack, leaving blobs of flour to follow, the aim being to find and catch the hare, and to the winner, the spoil of being the hare next week. Mos trails aren’t like this, and are laid a day or so in advance, mostly by hashers who have retired from work, and so have the couple or three hours required for the process. Requires a good knowledge of local pubs and the paths around them, plus a degree of cunning to out-fox the FRBs.

The trail – usually laid in flour or sawdust, in its most primitive form, it’s just a series of blobs showing where to run, but normally including checks – a point from which the trail can go in any direction, and the FRBs have to find out where, fish hooks, which send a specified number of FRBs to the back of the pack, regroups, where the pack has to wait for further instruction, or possibly just to see a particularly lovely view. Occasionally, the markings are mistaken for other things, including dog poison, burglar markings(?), Novichok, directions to a rave and cocaine.

The circle – formed before and after the run. The circle before is used to welcome any new runners, to go through the trail symbols and to give some idea of how long the trail is (Usually 6ish miles), and how much shorter you can make it by taking the medium(about 4.5) or short(3ish) versions. The circle after is used for talking about the trail, with nominal penalties for misdemeanours on the trail, such as falling over. It used to be a very beery affair, but modern attitudes to drinking and driving mean it’s a half of bitter penalty, or a lemonade if you’re an abstainer. It’s also used for announcing the next week’s venue.

The On Inn – the pub, house, car park, sports and social club, or whatever is being used for that week’s venue. The trail will start and end at the On Inn and it needs to be chosen with care so there are enough paths around to set a decent long, short and medium, and keep the FRBs guessing, and also an understanding owner who doesn’t mind having a car park full of sweaty people in various states of dress.

Nash Hash/Inter Hash/Euro Hash etc. Every now and again, there are large gatherings of hashers who meet up for a weekend for a camp out, a few beers and a run. I’ve yet to do one of these, but people seem to really enjoy it, and wear their commemorative T-shirts with some considerable pride, and whenever you visit a hash in another town, or region, veterans will ask after people from your chapter that they’ve met on these dos. Part of me wonders if going on one of these things wouldn’t send me too far down the rabbit hole.

Hash Stats – if it’s not on the internet, it didn’t happen, and nearly every hash chapter keeps a diligent set of stats, with prizes for completing your 100th, 200th run etc. and we know who needs to get a life because they haven’t missed a run in a year, who has hared the most times (seriously competed for by some of the more mature members) and when Mike Bushell last turned up (Feb 2017). Once a year, these are used together with anecdote and outright lies to do an awards ceremony.
