They are good for mobility westmoors

Doc - most simplistic is sprinting improves running form (posture) .

More over the faster you can run 100 the faster you do 400 therefore the faster you run a mile

(All caveats by appropriate training)

Good points Gobi re sprints

I like to put a run with some 100 metre strides in normally 6 or so sets with 20 seconds rest between each set working on form between each set
This is normally part of a recovery run of 5 - 7 miles

The strides are probably done at about 80-90% max speed

A lot of the sprint drills we do in our warm ups anyway so I didn't mind them too much. It was the agility/circuits that I found tedious. If I wanted to do that I would sign up to a circuits class, not a running club! According to my Garmin we covered 0.8 mile in the 40 minute session, and most of that would have been walking between the stations!

My club is a very informal one but we are having an intervals session over the lighter months. we do a 5k lap with intervals and then a short session of walk/jog/run (less than a mile in total) which is fab - the run segments are very short and I don't think I'd tried to "sprint" since school days, its a great feeling although at first it felt like I was going to fall over :)

Thanks Gobi. That makes sense.

I noted yesterday that when I had already done 8 miles and then started some intervals how they didn't feel as though as I expected, is that because it's a slighty different exercise and I hadn't fatigued those bits of me?

After 8 miles you are probably not going hard enough in the effort. - Doc

Must admit if I make it to running club I expect to run, unless it is called circuits :-) - Westmoors

Riggsy - I have said it before and will say it again
If you go to 90% doing strides in a recovery run you just ruined your recovery run.

The entire point of recovery is recovering

Woohoo, I am Very Happy - ran our club's 3 mile track handicap race this evening in the fastest time I've done for that distance or thereabouts (including 5ks) for years, 26:54, which gives me an old lady WAVA of just over 70, and promotes me to a Fetch Springbok standard! Gradually creeping towards a Silver - just need one more.
