I think the main reason was that I switched from mainly flat road running to lots of uphill and trail run running. Running uphill put a lot of strain on the calves. I trained for a road marathon in early May and I had a couple of 200+ months in the build up. So I was used to the volume. May was lower mileage (135) because I needed a few easy weeks after the marathon. But then I made the mistake to resume the same volume on different terrain and that was probably too much. Lesson learned. I shouldn't do two totally different races within a couple of months from each other. The trail race at the end of July wasn't ideal. |

As long as you learn π What limited running I do is 100% based on condition/management of issues. So if I race run on a track 3 times in a week I need the need the next week off track. Run cross country then a few days off the technician trails. Etc... |

It's great that you're still out there running despite the limitations. And it sounds like you listen to your body and just do what it allows you to. I hope you can keep it up. I have a few former team mates from my old Tri club who are unable to run these days (they are 55-60 yo). They did enormous volume in their 20 and 30s, then injuries started to bother them but they ignored them until it was too late - and then they needed knee replacements or hip surgery in their 50s. I've learned that once you are north of 40, you need to pay more attention to things like that. When I was younger, it wouldn't have been a problem. At the moment, I have to manage three potential problem zones: adductors, QL and calves. I'm doing prevention work 1-2x a week for each of them. Fingers crossed I can keep going π |

Useful insights, both. During this year I've had some problems with calf strains. I have been working on increasing the amount of strengthening exercises I do in my weight training sessions to try and help prevent future injury so π€

tipsku I'd love to claim I was wise but it took 2 Broken legs(same leg both bones) discovering an ankle problem and then a spine issue(running not 100% to blame more 3 into 4 decades of various contact sports) before I listened to doctors. I'm still not a Saint and push the limits. Looking at 2022 there is no doubt that stepping back when I did is allowing me to race at a better level than I expected in my 50s. I ran my fastest 5k since 2009 this year. |

Ness I discovered if I over did calf work it also brought its own problems make sure you are doing enough stretching and also mobilisation of the ankle.
