Amusingly when i looked this morning pre run it had dropped to 4600 and now after picking a route which nets new circles its back up over 5000

Refresh the page again kstuart and it should give you the correct total. The last total would also include all circles collected today including what you have previously collected which is why you need to refresh (I think what I've typed is correct).
