Imagine you could search all the public blogs...

5:47pm, 29 Jun 2022
Did you know that we have over a third of a million blog entries?

The current figure is 365,203 - of which 331,037 are public or buddy-viewable.

Feature 1248 asks for the ability to search these blogs.

fetcheveryone.com/featurevoting?sort=score&keyword=1248

The votes are largely in favour (62 yes versus 7 no). There are even seven golden tickets stacked up next to it, so for those seven people, it's the thing they want most of all.

Right then. Let's pretend there's a search box that allows you to search all the blogs that you are allowed to see. What will you search for?

Type your searches in the comments. It'll be good test data for me to see your real-life examples, rather than trying to guess how you'd use it. And if I get less than seven replies, I'll be peering over the top of my glasses at a few of you ;-)

  • How many times I mention sausage. Also, because I forget what I did, things like place names, Oxford, Peru ( a plus would be that it isn't case sensitive), then I have a habit of looking back at 'training' blogs I have written, so pyramid, interval. Then race names, sizzler for example.

Banking Scandal at Fetch Towers!

11:57am, 28 Jun 2022
A few weeks ago, I was contacted by a lady from Barclays (the keepers of the Fetch bank account). A nice lady called Penny (good name for a banker I guess) had been assigned to do a 'Due Diligence Review' of my trading activities :-O

Quite a bit was just checking that the details were right, but there was an ever-so-slightly concerning section entitled 'Trade Overseas'. I was asked to describe all my overseas activities, and there were some slightly nervy questions in a subsection about funds coming my way from Russia :-O :-O

In case you don't know, there's no additional wheeling and dealing that goes on behind the scenes here. Money in comes from your donations, kit purchases, FERC memberships and Google Ads revenue. Money out goes on software, servers, buying Fetch kit, postage, my wages, and tax. Occasionally I buy a techy book, or some nice pens :-) As has been well-documented in my blog, I bought a battery for my laptop last month (and bloody great it is too).

But of course, some of my donations do come from the bank accounts of overseas Fetchies. It's a small list, comprising something less than 1% of all donations - but it includes Switzerland, Ireland, Germany, UAE and Russia! Penny was quite happy when I explained that these were donations from individuals. And my Russian backer? A sum total of £4 in 2021 :-) Obviously I am not moving in the right circles.

Everything went quiet for a few weeks, and I assumed that Barclays had decided I was legit. Then I got a message on Friday that made me LAUGH MY ASS OFF :-) Penny's team had been beavering around the site, and had a query:

On the customers website there is a section headed up ‘betting’: fetcheveryone.com/betting.php

Can you please reach out to the customer and ask the following questions:

- Obtain details about the betting page on the website and exactly how this works,

- Is there any money value to the points that are placed on the bets? If yes provide details, if no, how do people get points to be able to place bets

- What does someone get for a winning bet?

I'll leave it to you all to imagine my response :-)

But it has got me thinking about whether my search engine rankings might be adversely affected by stuff that refers to b*tting. If a human isn't sure that it's just a silly game, and not some money laundering scam, then what hope do the search engines have? Actually, scratch that. They are probably already smarter than us all. But I might change the name of the game, to reduce the risk of this happening again. It's well overdue for a refresh anyway. Perhaps I should rebrand it "GuessWhoDoWellNow" or "NothingToSeeHere".

Anyway... see me out back in ten minutes. Bring the briefcase. The codeword is "lemondrops". Wear gloves. Don't make eye contact. Back away slowly.

7pm on Baker Island #everyoneday

8:35am, 27 Jun 2022
No, I'm not suggesting a new reality TV mashup :-) I've just been looking at whether there are any places in the world where it's still #everyoneday.

According to this website, the last place on the planet where June 26th 2022 still exists is tiny Baker Island, which is 12 hours behind GMT:

24timezones.com

But the residents won't be adding any miles to our totaliser, because they are all birds, reptiles and crabs. Ok, and because they don't have the internet.

In keeping with the Fetch style guide, the island was once extensively mined for guano :-)

It's an 'atoll', which I had to look up - a ring shaped island. Pretty cool, and absolutely perfect for next year's badge :-)

There are a few more places yet to finish #everyoneday:

Niue is at GMT-11 (the site I linked to lists Samoa, but they decided to hop the dateline in 2011)

The Cook Islands, Hawaii and Tahiti are at GMT-10 (I wonder if there are any lucky Fetchies on holiday in those places?)

The Gambier Islands are at GMT-9 - still plenty of time to sign up and run if you're one of the 1431 residents :-)

And here's a final call for Alaskans at GMT-8 - you've got half an hour to get something logged!

I know some folks upload a few days of training at a time - so the figure for the 26th might rise a bit further, but when the non-existent clock strikes midnight on Baker Island, that's the number I'll take as our final total for #everyoneday. I suspect there have been days when we've done more miles - but I hope you all enjoyed watching the totaliser. And I was very disorganised about this, so I didn't give folks much notice. Please add June 25th 2023 to your diaries for our next #everyoneday adventure :-) and we'll try to get that little bit further!

Final total to follow in about 4.5 hours :-)

#EveryoneDay - Sunday 26th June 2022

9:43am, 24 Jun 2022
This Sunday is the longest Sunday of the year, especially if you get stuck in :-)

The idea came from a blog in November by Oscar The Grouch:

fetcheveryone.com/blog/9803/2021/11/438330

In a nutshell, we pick a day, and see just how much mileage we can record collectively on that day.

I've added a totaliser on the home page, which will start looking a bit more interesting once Sunday arrives.

I've no idea whether this will work or not - but if nothing else, we should be able to set a target, and get everyone aware of this, so that next year we can go bigger.

There's a thread where you can call in and share your plans:

fetcheveryone.com/forum/everyoneday---june-26th-2022-62269/

EDIT: There's a badge ;-)

Spare Challenge Coasters

9:40am, 22 Jun 2022
Hopefully by now, the vast majority of the Fetch Challenge coasters have wung their way to their new owners. Reports suggest that they are either proudly in service, or else put away until the owner crosses the finish line :-)

I have roughly this many spares:

I can't release them yet, because I'd like to make sure that everyone who ordered one receives it; and that they are happy with it.

BUT... if you've got coaster envy, and would like one of the spares, please choose the fourth option in this poll:

Once I'm happy that everyone is happy, I will be in touch with any interested parties :-) The coasters are £10 each, and every pound goes towards supporting your favourite website. Assuming that this *is* your favourite website.

The North West Passage

3:43pm, 21 Jun 2022
Whilst I was at Shepperton, I got talking to LindsD about a book I am reading. It's called The Terror, and it's about two ships that get stuck in the ice whilst attempting to find the North West Passage. At 900+ pages, it's a bit of a project, but it's been well worth it. I am just past half way!

It probably helps that I saw the series on BBC back last year. It helped conjure up the atmosphere, and has given me some idea about the characters from the get-go.

It's a tragic story really, that people died in the name of exploration; but I've enjoyed looking at the world map, and picking out some of the islands and bits of sea that get referenced in the book.

It's given me an idea for a Fetch game (working title: the North West Passage). You find yourself at the centre of a large grid, with only one exit. The unexplored squares remain clouded over. Each journey reveals a mixture of land and sea. Can you successfully find the route to safety? Or will you remain trapped in the ice, be forced to eat your own trainers, your gruesome remains found by other runners?

To make this work, I am going to need to be able to build mazes. Not just sitting down with a pen and paper, sketching them out - but to be able to generate them on a grand scale. A wet finger in the wind suggests maybe 100 x 100 squares, mapped onto an area big enough to be challenging. We're talking about emulating the feats of ice explorers here.

There could be other stuff hidden in the grid too. A shovel, to help you remove a few squares of troublesome earth. Flaming torches, to help beat back advancing ice. Beasties... to be beastly.

Forgive me then, for spending £21 of your kind donations on this very exciting book:

I really wasn't expecting such a pertinent book to come up when I searched. But if you're ever looking for something to get me for Christmas, this sort of thing is brilliant ;-)

As a concept, this is nothing more than a few rough ideas at the moment. But it sounds like it could be a lot of fun. Ideally, it'll be adaptable to city and rural players - the latter tend to have fewer options when it comes to fine tuning routes; and to offer varying levels of difficulty to challenge new and experienced players.

I am going in. I may be some time.

  • I found The Terror a rare case of the TV adaptation being better than the book. There is too much padding to create a doorstop. Erebus is a more factual account but no one knows exactly what happened to Franklin and his crew. It probably wasn’t a monster. More interesting is the way Europeans ignored information from the Inuit.

    The game sounds great.

  • It's hard enough already ...
    - work out the conquersize boundaries and near edges
    - memorise rundle number circles
    - watch where I am on the challenge
    - and run
    - and look for deer

And now you'll be trying to make us collect spaed to bash goblins with (or some such activity) and collect treasure and avoid death traps and work our way through a maze.

I need to step outside for a bit. I may be some time.

(But what I really want is a way to monetize rundle numbers)

    ;-)

  • Sounds great!

I have another idea for a game - I'm calling it Wormhole, or maybe ALT-CONQ. You could play it the same grid as conquercise. Each day a random square or squares opens a wormhole to a random square in another part of the world. Once your route drops through that square you start building up conquercise zone in your new location where there are other wormholes taken you to other parts of the world, and some that will return you to your home square. As well as earning ALT-CONQ zones and exploring new parts of the world, there can also be badges for the longest streak, in terms of squares conquered, before ending up back home. The main challenge I can see is programming it so you don't end up in the middle of the ocean, (but does that matter?).

Feature Request Voting - Know Your Limits!

2:21pm, 15 Jun 2022
I've been beavering away over the last few days, farming the feature request list for small improvements around the site. It's a nice way to send a few people a little notification that says (hopefully) 'something you wanted has just happened' :-)

Today, I've made one little adjustment to the feature voting system, in order to give them a bit more focus. In short, you now have a budget of 200 yes votes. I was tempted to make it something really restrictive, like 20 - but I'm balancing that with trying to avoid giving you all too much of a headache, because I reckon this should be fun :-)

By restricting the number of yes votes, it hopefully focuses the hive mind on "what do I really want", rather than "this doesn't seem unreasonable, I'll vote yes". I know there are golden tickets too, but given that they focus on one thing only, they feel a bit limited too.

I reckon there are 27 Fetchies (myself included) who have breached that 200 yes vote limit. The system won't let you add any more yes votes until you get back under the threshold.

To help you trim down your yes votes, I've added two options.

The first is a new option in the dropdown box in the header, titled "show my yes votes".

fetcheveryone.com/featurevoting?sort=myyes

You can switch a batch of these to 'meh' and then reload the page to see where you're at.

Or, there's a nuclear option, also in the header, titled 'Remove all my yes votes'.

As with everything, it's up for debate :-)

  • And the third option? Those fetch hamsters work faster to clear the 'yes' votes ;-)

I might think twice about a yes for a really hard or expensive thing to implement, even if I'm still in the "yes" camp generally, whereas "dead simple" things can attract a "yes" with more confidence.

UTMOST Division 8: YIKES!

2:21pm, 14 Jun 2022
I think my dream rise from division 14 to division 8 may have reached its limit. I found myself in a promotion spot in D9 last week:

rather than try to improve my times, I left it to chance, and had a really light running week before Shepperton (see yesterday's blog).

No challengers emerged, so I made into D8, and I'm right at the bottom :-)

Luckily, there are only 17 players at the moment, so I'm safe for this week - but I'd like to improve my standing a bit.

Mile
A solid 18 points - no point trying to improve on it this week.

5k
A decent 15 points - if my other times were this good, I'd be challenging for a promo spot.

5 Miles
Whoa! 7 points. Needs some work perhaps. I ran it as part of a 10k, so a dedicated 5 mile run should be better. And the bunching is good. Taking 30 seconds off my 38:28 would boost this to 16 points. Mmm, tasty!

10k
Currently 12 points, and there's a bit of bunching about 10 seconds quicker than me. If I go for the five miler, and that goes well, I'll consider hanging on for a bit longer :-)

10 Miles
In theory my other times point to 1:20 being on the cards, and with it, maybe 15 points. Not sure how I feel about going for that this week. It's looking like warm weather. We'll see.

Half Marathon
Again, not sure I fancy it this week.

The Plan
Knock out a five miler (30 seconds quicker than my current one) to get to 71 points, and then see if I can hang on to that 30 seconds 'til the 10k marker. If I can make that 31 seconds, I should get to 75 points, giving me a fighting chance of the promo spots. Oh my! It's possible!

Shepperton Weight Gain Programme

2:33pm, 13 Jun 2022
This weekend, I've been in Shepperton, at the Level Water 24 Hour Swim Relay. TLDR: it was great fun.

We were a team of six people, each doing a varying number of swims, with some folks doing 5-6 swims during the 24 hours. It kicked off at 1pm on Saturday, with each swimmer spending an hour at a time in the lake, before clambering out and tagging the next person.

Here's the lake:

if you look closely, you can just about make out the splashings of a multitude of swimmers creating a 400m triangular shape on the water, as they went round and round the three red buoys.

Over on the right of the pic, in the 'r' shaped bit of grass, you can see the majority of the campers. We're in there somewhere!

My build up to this event consisted of:

9 x 1 hour swims at the leisure centre in Feb and March
1 x 20 minute outdoor swim at Box End in April.
1 x 40 minute outdoor swim at Box End in May.

Consequentially (is that ok, Sharkie?) I felt a bit underprepared going into a 24 hour swim relay in a lake I'd never swum in before. Initially, I'd only agreed to doing one hour of the 24, but at some point in the last few months, I'd ended up committing to two hour-long swims. Not a lot compared to some of our team, but enough for me to be going on with.

We arrived nice and early on the Saturday, as we'd been told that camping space would be at a premium. Here's our tent and gazebo, which we were sharing with another team of Bedford Harriers.

The tent came from our very own LindsD :-) She arrived with it in her car as we stood about blinking in the warm Saturday morning, and Katie and I gave her some good hugs. It very quickly felt as though we'd known her for a very long time - which I guess we have, because I reckon she's been a Fetchie for about 10 years - but she's just as awesome in real life. Two out of two people at Fetch Towers would recommend!

And she wasn't the only Fetchie! Along came Leatherback and Loggerhead with another car full of camping gear; and Nightjar and Silvershadow - as majestic as always :-) Add to that another six Bedford Harriers, and pretty soon we'd crammed our small grassy rectangular home with so much stuff that it looked like one of those puzzles where you have to move the pieces around to make a picture.

But oh... the cake! And the savouries! Whatever else, I'm pretty sure I came away from the weekend with a calorie surplus. That's one thing they never tell you about these 24 hour events - if you're not doing your bit, you're sitting around eating and drinking :-) Katie had made a vat of soup and some chocolate flapjacks - and everyone had brought something delicious. It may take me a few days before I can face a banana too, because we had more of those than any rational human beings could have eaten.

My contribution to the food competition was an offer to go get pizza for everyone. Here they all are, carefully stacked in the passenger seat of the car:

aka 'the leaning tower of pizza'*

*joke appears courtesy of Katie's eldest boy.

I have never driven more carefully! I picked them up at 6pm, but my swim was at 7pm - so I just watched the others tucking in whilst I started to get a bit nervous.

Did I mention there was a swim relay?

The water was nice and warm (it was a proper hot day) - there was no unpleasant moment where it seeps into one's suit like there is on colder days. And no ice cream head either - just lovely conditions. Here's your favourite goon, lining up for action:

The red buoys actually felt quite a long way apart, but in reality, it was something in the region of four minutes between each one. Because of the time of day, the sun was getting low - so it was hard to see the second buoy - but the sun acted as a great placeholder. Despite there being at least 70 people in the water at any one time, it was all very civil. No minimum distance was required - so people just did as many laps as they fancied, with kayaks intercepting optimists when the time started to run out.

Here's Katie, about to do her first swim (with some bonus budgie smugglers in the background):

I managed five laps (~2k) in about 56 minutes, which I was really happy with. Typically, I manage about 2.3km in an hour in an indoor pool, so with the 'natural' conditions, it felt like I did ok. No doubt I had some help from being in a good wetsuit, which would have helped keep my legs in a good position. But I also felt like something clicked in terms of understanding swimming as a distance sport.

The lake itself was lovely. No straggly weed, no spindly killer fish, no grindylows. Not much to see at all really. I couldn't see the bottom, but I managed to put that out of my head. There were kayaks everywhere, and we all had shiny pink hats - so I didn't feel in danger at any point.

Climbing out, I got proper Bambi legs. Not through exhaustion, but more because they sort of forget what they're supposed to do after an hour of swimming. Plus you can't see the ground as you make your way through the shallows, which I'm sort of used to.

I handed over, necked my pizza, and settled in with a bit of book reading. The nature of the event meant that there were always people coming and going - so it was great for people watching too.

With night falling, the swimmers all had to wear lights clipped to their goggles, and towfloats with lights too. I stood by the water's edge in the darkness, and watched the twinkling lights moving gently through the water. All the conversations carried across the surface too. No words, just a lovely feeling of humans happily doing their thing.

Katie had a 2am swim, so she went off to catch some sleep in the car. I stayed on my camping chair, and read until I was falling asleep. Goodness knows how many times I woke myself up with my own snoring, or my head rocked back or forward with a start. I must have been quite a sight :-)

Katie got up at midnight, so it was my turn for a kip in the car. The next thing I knew, it was 4am, and she was clambering in next to me, interior lights feeling like an interrogation. Bugger Off, I remember saying - at least until I realised what was going on.

Somehow we managed to grab an extra couple of hours - although I was a bit restless and achey by this point. My second swim was at a very sociable 8am, so we both stumbled back to the gazebo to find out how the team had got on. There were cheese toasties being made, and Katie bought me a bacon roll from the food stall, which went down well.

Second swim went pretty well, although I had a last minute panic. My contact lenses hadn't survived the night, so I had to decide between swimming with my poor sight; or using Katie's prescription goggles, which were a little way off my prescription, but reasonable for seeing. I went with the latter, and although I could see, the fit wasn't great (I didn't dare mess with her settings, because she was going in the water straight after me). So my eyes got a bit of a bath - but taking that into consideration, it went well. I managed five laps again, slightly slower this time (a wee bit tired perhaps, plus a few mid-swim goggle adjustments, plus maybe a bit less adrenaline).

Here's the beachy bit where the swimmers clamber out:

the lake is a slightly artificial blue - they use a dye in the water to help keep the weeds down by blocking the sunlight. As far as I know, it does no damage (but would happily be educated on that if it's not the case).

All our swimmers got home safely, and the event raised about £100k for the Level Water charity. A big thank you to those of you that donated to my Justgiving page a few months back. Here's the fragrant KatieB and LindsD with the totaliser:

and here are our teams lined up at the end:

We got home at about 3.30pm yesterday, and made it to about 8.30pm before all four of our eyes were starting to close. A 9.5 hour sleep has largely sorted me out :-) Would I do it again? Yes, definitely! If only for the calories! Bring it on!

UTMOST Division 9! Sub-50 10k :-)

12:42pm, 6 Jun 2022
I'll try to make this brief, 'cos I guess it's not the most interesting subject for people who aren't me :-)

Last week, I started down in 14th place in D10:

My 5 mile and 10k points were letting me down a bit, so I went out on Saturday to improve my 10k time (with the consolation of a 5 mile time if the wheels came off).

It went really well. I set the watch to 7:50/mile, which would have just about earned me enough points; and then managed to average 7:44. It was an out and back, and the out was into the wind, so I managed a negative split too (24:15 vs 24:07). It could have been a little faster, but my digestive system wanted to get involved just after 5 miles, so it was a bit grim for the last 1.2 miles to get the 10k. But I clung on (to everything), and got my fastest 10k time since Silverstone 10k in May 2018, and **checks notes** my fastest solo 10k since Feb 2016. Happy with that :-)

This gave me a promotion spot, and it looks like I've currently got enough to make D8 next Monday, if nothing changes:

The weak point now is my 10 mile time, which is a relatively pedestrian 8:28/mile - so if I get a good chance this week, I'm thinking maybe set the watch for 8:10/mile and see what happens. The usual race predictors suggest I could get sub-1:20, but 8:10/mile would be enough to give me an improvement in the UTMOST table, so that feels like a good aim.

  • Well done, based on that 48:03 10k you should be able to go sub-1:20:00 for 10 miles and 1:46:00 for the Half Marathon so you're in good shape to improve those times and gain a few points... Good luck!
