Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

#runningman 🏃 My first race after a 4 month break from racing, my last being on July 12th.
I had done 12 races this year up til that point including the London marathon so took some time off to just enjoy running for a bit. So I am chomping at the bit to do another race and amreally looking forward to this one.
First race for 4 months but well chuffed with a new PB by 18 seconds Been a great year for me with my running improving in so many ways and with this likely to be the last race of the year for me ....a greatending to 2008.

Tim of Fife WOLVERTON 5-MILER (AT WILLEN LAKE) - 36.06 PB (stopwatch) -

Where do I start with this one. I'd had a really rotten week. Quite serious work-related stress. Broken nights' sleep. Feeling lethargic and depressed. Yesterday, I dragged myself over 2.5 miles on the gym treadmill and felt awful. But the lady next to me urged me to enter today's race nevertheless. She told me that things would come together on the day.

Well, I finally decided to take part just a couple of hours before the start time. Didn't enjoy the hour or so I spent in the registration building. It was full of running club 'geeks', resplendent in club tops, jackets etc and armed with garmins, gels, power drinks and all manner of other aids. All really over the top and a wee bit anal. God, how hard can it be just to put one leg in front of the other and repeat? Me, all I had was a £4.99 Aldi top, a pair of old shorts and a tatty stopwatch.

Anyway, the walk to the start was absolutely bitter. The wind chill factor around the lake really made it feel freezing cold. At the Start, met a lady that I knew who was aiming for 37.00. Decided to try and run with her for a couple of miles, then relax right off and hopefully come in the right side of 40 minutes.

At the half-way point, I was really surprised to find that I was still keeping up with the lady runner and feeling good. Also, that I was running at PB pace - gulp. She started to fade, so I said goodbye and pressed on. Had a good fourth mile, but it was slower and took me about ten seconds off PB pace. Never mind, I thought. The run had been beyond my wildest expectations. Just 'run free' to Meat Loaf over the last mile and clock a good time.

In the end, perhaps due to always ending my gym runs with a speed flourish, I found some power from somewhere and 'flew' the last mile - especially the final quarter. The result was a PB by 6 seconds. I'm shell-shocked.

Overall, a great run and a great time. But I'm really starting to loathe all the 'trappings' that go with races. I used to really immerse myself in it all. Now, I find it all somewhat weird. So, despite the joy of a genuinely unexpected PB, will be very selective about future races. After all, I don't need to enter races to be a runner.
