It took me until my third turn to get letters 2, 3 and 5 right, by which time I'd eliminated letters which removed 13 of the words in larkim's list in the spoiler. Then got it on my fourth try.

I like the analysis. I had the R in the correct place plus an E on word 1, plus Iā€™d eliminated T and S.

Second word DREAM which gave me M and A so choices severely limited by then I think.

I play in hard mode although I don't actually have it turned on in the settings on every device where I play so don't always get a *

I have a standard go-to first word; if it returns no hits I have a standard second word.

Sometimes to make my brain work I'll put in the known green and yellow letters (yellow in a different space, obvz) with X for the unknown spaces. I don't hit ENTER but it would reject them as invalid answers anyway. I find that helps me visualise possible letter-combinations and words.
