Here's the list of valid solutions based on getting letters 2, 3 and 5 correct on guess 1. Then some commentary! All in the spoilers, so don't look!!

There are 9 possible initial letters that could be used to start a word *RA*E in the list of answers.

Most likely first letter is then G so if GRADE was your first guess you rule out TRADE as well as the other G words. You also rule out words starting with D. Then you'd go for CRATE and now you've lost 16 of the 20 words already with 5 guesses left as you lose IRATE, BRACE and TRACE as well as the C words.

Next you should try BRAKE or BRAVE both of which eliminate each other, so you'd be left with ERASE and FRAME with 3 guesses left.

Don't know why I picked GRADE up there; if you were to pick GRATE instead there are more Ts than Ds in the list as a whole so that would statistically be the best starting point I think and I think you'd be forced into getting the right answer by the 6th guess. But all that assumes that from before trying the first set of letters you already know that it's a *RA*E word.

The flip side is that if you get *RA*E from a first guess of IRATE and then guess DRAKE etc you'd end up running out of guesses even if you knew the letter frequency accurately for all of the remaining words (I think!)

I had word 4 as my 4th guess
I had word 17 as my 5th guess
I then had word 5 as my 6th guess.

I had two vowels and a letter all in the wrong order from guess one but just couldn’t get the brain to function.

Had word 15 on 2nd guess
Word 12 on 3rd guess.
Then got it.

Mental reminder (that I'll forget!!) to try not go for these letter combinations too early.
