I have an over exuberant dog when he's around other dogs...nothing malicious, just very friendly and a bit too boisterous. Our trainer said I should get his attention ("watch me") then drop treats on the floor to distract him. That's OK if the other dog is on lead and walking past, but not if I need him to keep calm for longer. He can keep the excited wriggling/panting up for an hour at puppy class. How did you (Royal You) train your dogs to stay calm, or were they all naturally sensible with other dogs? I'm finding it all a bit embarrassing...
He's also started feet biting/clothes tugging during the 6pm mad half hour. Does that sound familiar, D2?

The dropping treats on the floor would have to be if the other dog was on a lead - a greedy dog might just move in, barge Charlie out of the way and eat the treats otherwise
On the lead I just try to get Wanda to Watch and either sit and watch me until the other dog has gone past (often the treat has to be right on the nose for this) or if I can I ask her to walk close and watch - again with the treat right on the nose.
If other dogs are off the lead and the owners are OK with me letting Wanda off too, we tend to just see what happens - usually the dogs either have a good old play/chase or ignore each other. Only once have I and another owner both agreed to let our dogs off the lead at the same time and it turned into what to an outsider would have looked like some sort of organised dog fight I did know that the other dog was not always friendly but as his brother was one of Wanda's best doggy friends we thought we'd take a risk. At least we now both know for next time

Flossie was very keen to say hello to other dogs as a puppy (I can recall being dragged across the chutch hall floor when she was really quite small :-0) but after a few meetings with grumpy dogs she soon became a bit more circumspect and is now actually quite submissive. Apart, that is, from when she meets other Labs or Golden retrievers. These she sees as 'family' and can be greeted effusively

I'm on nights this week. Cookie has been barking today whilst I've been trying to sleep. Anyone want a Border Terrier?

I'd love a Border Terrier, Dave but I know you don't really mean it and phal and Phoebe would not be impressed

I think Charlie needs to meet some big dogs who will clip his ears for him. The puppy party is all small dogs, the bigger dogs go later. The training class also has smallish dogs, the largest being a cocker spaniel or 3. So far, none have stood up to his boisterousness!
We've been at the vets for an hour or so this afternoon. A meeting with the vet nurse to explain the "Fit for Life" scheme that we signed up for and then an appointment with the vet to check his ear infection. It's no better after a week so they're going to do some deeper investigation now, swab on Saturday to find out exactly what's causing the inflammation.
He's looking a bit sorry for himself, fed up of being prodded and poked I think. Puppy party graduation later so a busy day - he should sleep well tonight!

I should think he will take himself off to bed after all that without any fuss at all! Hope the ear soon gets better

Hi, my PC has been at menders all day; I've not been ignoring everyone! Sounds very familiar AtC though mine is not just confined to evenings. We had another moment this morning when ball in mouth didn't work for first time!!... Luckily I had 'emergency' training lead with me so for the very first time I put it on when not doing training in the yard / garden and we walked nicely down the footpath to home. Cue big sigh of relief! She has had the wind up her tail all day and jumped all over my daughter when she came, but we did a walking to heal demonstration which went well
So tomorrow...... off to vet to be spayed... of course no food after 20.00 tonight which means no bribes in the morning...... and no bribes to bones or similar during tonights madness - OMG!
I will have earned the day off while she is there.
